+100 but get a male. |
| Tibetan terriers are wonderful dogs! No shed and hypoallergenic. Our male 6 month old is very gentle with kids and a total love bug. They like to just hang out with the family and aren't high energy dogs. |
| Cavachon. Sweet, playful, very social and great with kids. Practically no shedding. |
+1. Our mini golden doodle weighs 15 lbs. and hair does not shed. At least I have never noticed hair on the floor or anywhere else. |

I would think about a slightly larger dog. Generally the bigger the dog, the better with kids. Toy breeds are protective of their owners, usually bond to a single person, and easily frightened. Many larger dogs are calmer and don't need a ton of indoor space provided they get outdoor exercise. And they tend to bark less.
I'm also creeped out by the idea of a golden mix only weighing 15 pounds. That's some funky genetic manipulation there. |
Op was not asking about toy breeds. Most dogs mentioned are in the medium category and are good with kids. |
| Havanese! and don't listen to people who say you can't find a rescue. I've had great luck. Just search "(your city) havanese rescue" or poodle, maltese, etc. |
| We are researching cockapoos right now - started looking at goldendoodles but we are too afraid we will end up with a bigger one and the minis are pretty pricey. |
| Get a schnauzer poodle mix. Calmer than a regular poodle, and unlike a doodle, both breeds dont shed, so your dog is likely to be even more hypoallergenic. |

Every single cockapoo I've met has been bad with kids -- nippy and nervous. Neither cocker spaniels nor mini poodles have a great reputation as kid-friendly dogs. Here are small or medium dogs that generally seem to like kids: pugs, Westies, llaphsa apsa (I'm sure I've spelled that wrong); wheaton terriers Also hear great things about schnauzers. My sister got a rescue schnauzer/terrier mix that is a non-shedder and he's been great. He is medium sized. |
