4 years ago I did counsyl and their website said if you have major insurance you won't have to pay more than $99. I was billed $99 on federal basic blue cross. My DH had blue cross (separate plan) through state of MD. After my test showed scary results we had to get him tested. His insurance covered 100% and he did not carry the same mutations as I did. Yay! I know this wasn't the question, but if you're already pregnant please consider getting tested at the same time as DH. My blood work was misplaced so I got retested at 17 weeks. The results came back at 21 weeks that I had three mutations that, if inherited from both parents, would result in stillbirth or early death. My husband's bloodwork wasn't back until I was 24 weeks pregnant. It was awful waiting. I planned to terminate if our DD had the mutations, but wouldn't have done that without an amino, which would have meant a very late termination. I'm grateful everyday that we have our wonderful DD and didn't face that dilemma. |
I have United Healthcare, and they did not charge me because I am over 35. |
Counsyl is not the cell-free DNA test that checks for trisomy. It checks the mother (and if necessary, the father) for their own genetic conditions, like being a carrier for cystic fibrosis. This type of testing can be serious $$$. |
That stinks. GW didn't recommend it but I felt strongly about wanting to have it done (very high negative predictive value) and they were certainly willing to give me the order to get the test drawn. |
I'm over 35 and have Cigna, my EOB said I would owe $200 to progenity, but when i called Cigna they told me I would not receive a bill |
Counsyl does tests for both. I did the genetic screening when I first started with my RE and since it wasn't covered by my insurance, I only paid $99. Then, at 10 weeks, my OB's office drew blood for the NIPT/cell-free dna test through Counsyl. Since I didn't have any of the necessary risk factors and am under 35, my insurance wouldn't cover it. Counsyl advised that if they sent it through my insurance it would most likely cost around $800 dollars but if they billed me directly, out of pocket, they would charge $350. I opted to pay for it out of pocket. The results included checking for trisomy and gender. |
BCBS private paid for it - but I'm 39. |
Yes, covered at 13 weeks. I am 41. I believe it was Harmony and it did identify the sex. |
Yes, Panorama, under a Carefirst PPO, but I had to appeal a denial first with a letter of medical necessity from my provider. |
Yes, fully covered for both of my pregnancies. GW-MFA with Verifi for the first and Kaiser with Panorama, I think, for my current pregnancy. I was 35 for my first and obviously older now. |
Mine didn't so I declined. I was under 35 all three times and no other known risk factors. |
Meant to add - my coworker w/ the same insurance who was high risk but under 35 got it covered. |
I'm under 35 and BCBS would not cover it, but I spoke with Harmony and advance and they assured me that it would not cost more than $160 out of pocket if insurance would not cover. This is what our doctor's office said to expect as well, I'm not sure if they have a deal with Harmony or what. |
Yes, I have an Aetna PpO plan and it was covered. But I am over 35 now, for my first child I was under 35 and extra genetic screens weren't really recommended to me. |
