Want to add that we normally use an educational consultant to help write the IEP so in our case the entire process cost less using Dr. Black. If OP thinks there maybe issues in getting an IEP - like your DC tests at or above grade level - it'll be more cost effective to use someone like Dr. Black who can attend IEP meetings instead of getting an neuropsych and then hiring an advocate to help get an IEP. |
Our children's hospital neuropsych called into our IEP meeting and was immensely helpful. She didn't even charge us. |
Who did you use? We may do the next neuropsych at Children's. We used Dr Atmore for ADOS/ADI-R at Children's when DS was younger and she also went out of her way to help us. |

For a comprehensive evaluation from a doctor (PhD) who knows what they're doing will cost you anywhere from $3K-$4K around here.
Do not take shortcuts with something like this OP. You get what you pay for, and you want to have the correct diagnosis so please do not put this in the hands of an experienced person who will give you "a good deal". |
I meant to say inexperienced, not experienced. |

We used Dr Sanz. She's extremely knowledgable and a pleasure to work with. Highly recommend if you can request her. |
Thanks! How old was your child? Also, does your child have both ASD/ADHD? Our child has a complicated profile but we are tempted to go to Children's bc they take insurance. Also, we were thinking about getting an evaluation at the Yale Child Study Center which has an even longer wait but we would be submitting the report to mainstream private schools (not around here) for admissions and they are very well known and have an impeccable reputation. |
| Another vote for Paula Elitov. We found her thorough and very helpful. Her written report was fantastic. |
We have actually used her several times but our kids don't have ASD. DD has ADHD and anxiety. DS has LD. |
Should have added our DD was 13 and DS was 8 and 10. |
Very helpful! Thank you! |
| Op here. I have heard a lot about dr black and I'm sorry if this offends some, but I have often wondered if dr black has ever not diagnosed a child with some SN case. I worry that people like him may over diagnose. |
I don't know about others but I know that for my child, Dr Black diagnosis, report and recommendations for treatment are spot on and has made DS's life 1000% better. |
I would also think that if you're at the point of paying 4000 out of pocket for an evaluation you at least know *something* is wrong, even if you're going because you don't quite know what. Is that going to be universally true? Nothing ever is. But it's a highly self selecting population. |
We already had an Asperger's diagnosis from 3 other evals so the findings weren't too much of a surprise. It's generally recommended that kids with IEPs get a new eval every three yrs bc the IEP renewal comes up every three yrs. We could have requested an evaluation at no cost to us from our public school - they will do a psych Ed eval and they did one for DS in preschool which we were happy with - but wanted to go to Dr Black for a full neuropsych. Worth it for us. |
