Technically, the dead nail shouldn't fall off before the new nail is grown in. That is supposed to be how it works. Doesn't always though!
Now if you really didn't notice any changes to this nail before, you might want to get your other nails checked out for fungus. |
The injury would have happened months ago. And not necessarily have been so severe/acute to be noticed. Hiking or running can cause it, for example. |
EVERYBODY! CALM DOWN!
Let's just start from the beginning. Start with the boots and when you put them on that morning. Take us back to that moment and tell us everything you can remember from that day. |
My pinky toenails have always done this. |
Are you a runner? |
Not your situation, of course, but chemotherapy made all my nails fall off. They fell off in a similar fashion. One day they were ok, and the next they fell off. No pain. Always a new nail underneath. Sometimes, they discolored before and I knew they would fall off. Other times, not. So, it happens. Dr told me, reason aside, as long as there was a dry new nail underneath, there wasn't anything to worry about. |
really you should have a little funeral for your twin--something to bring you some closure |
OP may want to engage the services of medium to communicate with the soul of the toenail |
I read that OP's tonsil fell off and there was another one underneath.
Ewwww. See OP, it could be worse. |

Yes, that's totally normal. I'm a runner and that happens to me from time to time. |
This is 2nd time happen to me, my original toe nail came loose, after 3days, it finally fall off, and there is new toe nail right there to replace it.
I thought it was kind of nice! |
Totally normal, said the roller derby player. Sometimes trauma to the nail bed will be forgotten about and relatively unnoticed, even though the nail detaches. A new nail grows from the quick towards the end of the digit, and if the old nail hangs on, what you're describing can happen. |
Also, be sure to put it under your pillow for the toenail fairy. |
Buy better running shoes, with roomier toeboxes (Or maybe up half a size. This should not be happening |
