The FA company estimated that I could only afford to pay $1100

She's an URM with excellent grades and test scores. Perhaps they might find her equivalent who can pay more but I doubt it.

Same here -- the amount we could pay (and said that we could pay) was much higher than the EFC. I think it's because we're pretty frugal -- one car, no consumer debt, no cable or smartphones, etc. In any case, we're happy to pay the "extra" money and so far they've been happy to take it.

This describes my child as well. SSAT scores all in the 99th%ile, has never had an A- or lower, only As, URM, but can pay full tuition.

That's wonderful. How fortunate you are.

Well, in my defense, you did set yourself up when you stated "SHE'S A URM WITH EXCELLENT GRADES AND TEST SCORES. PERHAPS THEY MIGHT FIND HER EQUIVALENT WHO CAN PAY MORE BUT I DOUBT IT."

And I'm just sayin' . . . No offense meant, just answering your challenge. Your daughter is undoubtedly intelligent and any school will be happy to have her. Good luck!

And how fortunate she will be when she is admitted to NCS, GDS, Sidwell, Maret, Holton or Potomac, or likely all of them, and is offered a more affordable $1,100 tuition to obtain a top-rate education.

That is why I believe that every family should give to the best of their ability to their schools' AF, Endowment, and Capital Campaigns. Private school should be affordable to all those who have the ability and desire to attend.

She is an URM that isn't typical in this area of the country. I asked about demographics at the schools we applied to and none of them knew of any recently enrolled there. I really hope she is admitted and they offer enough FA to attend. I'm in a profession that doesn't pay much even though we are expected to to have a high level of education- think social worker. I really do hope the schools look at what I can afford.

No disrespect here but how much do you make that they estimated you could only afford $ 1100? I am a single parent with a home worth almost as much as I owe on it. I have W2 income only of $ 120,000 and it says I can afford $ 18,000. I am broke and no way can I afford that much. Currently, I pay $ 11,000 in tuition and still struggle! I just don't know why anyone would want to struggle just to have their kid in a private school.

They provide a Family Report after you finish filling out the information and sending in the documents they ask for. The Family Report said that they estimate I can afford to pay $1100. I know one of the FA companies (it could've been SSS or one of the other ones I filled out info for) asked how much I think I can afford to pay. I can afford appr. $7000-8000/yr. If this report is what the schools receive, I don't think I have any chance of getting any FA for a school that costs $25K. I know some schools do offer a lot of aid to a few families but this report makes me feel very doubtful.

I've submitted my paperwork and documents. Where would I find this Family report?

I believe last year I made $48K. If you are broke and you make $120K, you should look into a financial planner. Get rid of the pricey home. I said I could afford $7000 because that is what I could pay and not struggle.

If you used SSS, log in and then look at the bottom of the left hand side of the screen. It should say "View Family Report."

Maybe you read it wrong and it's $1,100 a month they think you can pay?

Also, the school may give you aid and then you need to decide how to come up with the rest.

I am single mom and struggling this year with my portion of the tuition. I am actually looking for a second job

FWIW we were told schools in this area may adjust expected contribution down a bit to reflect housing costs in this area being higher than the model amounts.
