$64,000 per refugee to relocate them to the US?

Why not allow them to rebuild their own country? Who will do that? Americans?

Sounds like musical chairs on an international level.

I don't think this is fair for us to be able to come up with money to pay $64,000 per refugee to relocate them to the US when we have so many homeless families and Vets here already and so many poor people here already struggling to eat. Does anyone else agree with this?

Disgraceful. We have families in need right here

The same politicians that don't want a single refugee ALSO want every single benefit and safety net taken away from the homeless and American families in need (on welfare). So those vulnerable groups of our society are screwed either way.
Please stop making it sound, as if the money spent on a refugee family would be directly given to an American in need. It would not.

Our poor get food stamps and benefits - its the working that really need the help as they do not make enough to live on but too much for benefits. Yes, we need to do more to help in the US but that would mean major government overhauls to accomplish it and no one is willing to put the time or money into doing it properly. I'm all for bring some of the refugees over.

I do have empathy for the refugees and have contributed $ to help them. Have you? I feel we can help them best by getting their country back where they can live there peacefully. If we continue to take on helping everyone but our own, the US will decline even more and then we won't be able to help anyone in the world.

You do realize many of us were refugee's and immigrants including many of your ancestors. Its not about donating money. You don't get it. It would be great if they could stay in their country, but they cannot. The US is declining as we are not effectively using the resources we have. We have so much government waste and corruption... imagine if we really did some clean up how much extra we could have. The poor get food stamps and many other programs - they are income based and eligible to everyone that meets the criteria. My family came over running from Hitler. Just think, if the US took more rather than turning those who needed it away, many of our family members could have lived. But, I guess that's ok with you and I personally cannot imagine what those people are going through. I fully support having them here.

Tell that to my friends with very educated children that can't find employment. They will be thrilled to know we are paying people from other countries to come here and take jobs that they may have had.

Your friends can find employment.. its just not the employment they want at the salary they want. That's like me saying I left my job knowing I would not get the income back if I left...at this point, I'd make 1/2 of what I was making (which was not very high). Life is about choices. They choose a career field that does not have a lot of jobs. You have to work your way up... many immigrants are willing to vs. US are wanting a job handed to them.

I expect your family worked towards assimilation, as mine did.

You really have no clue.

Holy crap. If it truely costs 64k per refugee, then I vote for no refugees.

I would be THRILLED to allocate additional funds and programs to the homeless in the US to help them get back on their feet as well as help refugees. OP are you sure you want to raise taxes and add programs to help the homeless?

My ancestors did come here and paid their own way even though they were leaving starvation and terrible times. However, the US did not pay for them one cent. They came here for one legally and waited in line and for two, they paid their own way and stayed with family or friends until they could make enough money. They would never have taken money from the US to come here.

They were dirt poor and had to ride a cargo ship - not fly here for free and be paid to come here.

Absolutely! I want to give the $64,000 to pie homeless and to our vets that are homeless and poor!

Typo meant to "our homeless"

This is a misleading statistic. It may cost 64k per refugee to get them established but it's been proven time and time again that once established refugees more than pay for the INVESTMENT we made in them by growing the economy.

Case in point, Steve Jobs is the child of a Syrian Immigrant. Apple alone has put enough into the US economy to pay for every refugee we might take (from every country this year!). Could the next Steve Jobs be among them?

From all accounts relocating refugees is an investment in the US economy, not an addition to debt.

What a fool. Do you play powerball thinking you'll probably win the jackpot?

Imagine what that $1.6 billion we would spend on 25,000 refugees could do if we invested it in Appalachia or in Southeast DC or Native American reservations? Why not invest in our own people - millions who are struggling?
