What HHI did you start your 401k?

Probably 5 years out of college; started maxing as soon as I did though.

As soon as I was eligible, one year into federal service. It was my first job after getting my PhD. I was making about 49k in 1999.

As soon as I had a "real" job (25, just after grad school). I started a Roth IRA when I was about 20.

Sorry, forgot the HHI. It was about $36k. I wasn't maxing though, but putting in about 7% with another 5% match.

The first job I had where it was offered, a year out of college. I was making $24K and contributed 5% to get the matching funds. This was in 1994.

First job, making $33k. I contributed 5% to get the employer match.

Should have done it when I was 22 and making $28k, but my $900 paychecks and $750 rent + bills made me stall. Now at 38 I'm regretting that big time.

Age 25 - first job out of law school in biglaw (125k at the time as salaries hadn't gone sky high yet). Maxed out but no match in that industry -- at least not at the NYC firms.

First job out of law school, aged 25, 106k salary, 2001. Worked for around 10 years and now staying at home, and I'm so thankful that I maxed it out every year. It was a fluke, too. Even though I went to law school and had a well paying job, I was not financially savvy and this was in the very early days of Google and readily-available personal finance advice. I attended the lunch by the 401(k) rep with a co-worker who, as we were leaving, just made an off-the-cuff remark about how, "Given the power of compounding interest, only an idiot would not max out..." I nodded like I knew all about it and maxed out

We started our kids' Roths the year they turned 18.

I started my Roth when I was 16 and got my first retail job after school. Started my 401K when I got my first job out of college (22, I think I made $28K) and have been contributing ever since.

First job after college, 14%, starting with first paycheck so didn't "feel" any pain with it.
