One final point and I might get flamed for this: wear some makeup. Do something to even out your skin tone, add some color (if you tend to be on the pale side), etc. You don't necessarily have to wear a lot. Even a little makeup will make you look even more polished and put-together, and I think it tells your clients that you care enough to put in a little effort.

OP here. For sure, makeup! I'm a fair-skinned brunette, with pale eyelashes and eyebrows that need to be filled in a bit. I use Bare Minerals powder foundation, and without it, I look haggish.

I can probably swing some $400 jackets if they are amazing, but the $1000 jackets are a no go.

You're totally on the right track, OP. I esepcially love the Max Mara suit. Modern but not showy. Great look.

Stop by Nordstrom Rack regularly or order a bunch from them on line knowing you can return whatever doesn't work to the store and then look around while you're there. I've found great stuff from them on-line.
