I don't get it. Can't you just ask her what's up? Tell her you don't buy her triathlon explanation and need more information. |
6 pm to midnight? most crossfit classes are an hour. not sure about tri training, but wouldn't it be more likely to be a weekend?
4 kids under 5 is tough. not to jump to conclusions, but a dom/sub relationship could be a way of dealing with intense stress. is she a perfectionist type? |
OP, does she have any reason to fear you? If so, that explains both studying martial arts or another form of self defense, and lying about it. |
I did this. We have actually gotten into arguments about it. She says she does a lot of "crawling" type of exercises to build core strength. She try also lift heavy objects and carry them. They use some kind of rope for working out. And she says its partially outdoors, which means shes doing some of this stuff in the dark. The cheekbone bruise last night was apparently from her accidentally hitting a rope against her face. I asked her what kind of triathlon is this? I thought triathlons were swimming, running and biking. Shes says what shes doing is more extreme, and its going to take place in next Spring by the companies to do the Tuff Mudder(?) type races. Still don't buy it- hence the increasing desire to hire a sitter next week. |
Have you asked her? "Hey hon, your hands are looking pretty beat up and I'm worried. Is this a normal triathlon training course, or is it combined with anything MMA style? If it is, let's go out and buy you some nice boxing gloves!" |
I find it very odd that she comes home all beaten & bruised too. Very odd. I suggest you act on your intuition OP + do follow her out one evening. I too, and just DYING to see how this story ends. Please...Oh please come back and let us know. Thx!! ![]() |

Not that I am aware of. We have never been violent towards each other. We generally don't fight much and when we do, we also clear it up (per-maritial counseling was great for learning this). One could assume, looking at her injuries, that I could be abusing her. Thankfully, most are below her neck. The cheekbone thing does scare me a bit. |
document all the marks on her... get a witness that it wasn't YOU that did it... she is setting you up for divorce by making all her friends and co-works think you are beating her. |
Tuff Mudder - Absolutely - those obstacle course type trainings can really beat you up - there is lots of crawling, climbing, in all kinds of weather.

I was actually going to say this except apparently there's some kind of feud between the Tuff Mudders and the Triathletes? |
+1 |
Not that she even needs my permission, but I told her that I'm okay with her learning how to fight, or even fighting competitively. She used to be a very good athlete and played competitively in college, so I get the desire to want "more." While I haven't said this, even if she is in some kind of fight club, I would be okay with that too. Just don't lie about it. That what I don't get. |
I was also thinking it was for one of those mudder courses. I could certainly believe that kind of training can cause some bruises.
By the way, a few people have died during those competitions. They do some crazy stuff like run an electrical current through the mud while people are crawling through it. I hope she's not doing that kind of course. |
Are you in the DC area, OP? It doesn't look like Tough Mudder will be coming here in the spring, but Warrior Dash has an event on May 14:
https://www.warriordash.com/locations/ Training in the dark seems dangerous and unlikely, though. Here is a suggested training schedule for the Warrior Dash: http://gregsbootcamps.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Warrior-Dash-Training.pdf which I guess could leave some bruises, but not sure how on her hands. You said you checked money-if she's doing a group training program, did she pay for it? It seems unlikely that it was free. I am now far too invested in this than I should be. Please come back and let us know what is going on! |
