Question on Harry Potter for 2nd grader

Anonymous
We the first two. My second grader wanted to keep going but her little sister is with us when we read (she's 5) and I did not think the little one was ready so we are taking a break. I would have kept going if my younger daughter wasn't in the room when we read them.

We bought our 1st grader the first book for his birthday and bought him the next book on each subsequent birthday. We found that to be a good way to make sure he could handle the content.

This is OP .. thank you all for your responses. I'm not concerned about him missing things that are over his head. I started reading adult SF/F (adult level, not "adult") at 10 and definitely missed a lot of things the first time around on many of the classics but that just made re-reading interesting. I'm more concerned because DS is a very black/white thinker and sensitive. He also tends to hang onto things and mull them over for weeks sometimes.

I think when we're done with our current reading material we will give HP a try but loosely plan to go through the first 3 books and then decide if we're going to go any further right now or wait.

Same here, I read the first three Pern in 3rd grade, totally missed everything to do with humans having sex, but I did get that the dragons were doing things because there were eggs later.

If you aren't sure that he's ready, perhaps try Warriors or Redwall. Because the characters are animals instead of humans, it can make it easier for some kids to tackle hard subjects.
