Ate a pink cheeseburger, frantic about it now! 23 weeks pregnant, am I okay?

OP, your baby won't be harmed by this. It sounds like you're doing a lot already to ensure your baby's health.

Let's cut the OP some slack. She's about to be a first time mom and is trying to get it right. Sure, she's anxious right now. Why the need to attack her?

I ate a rare steak when I was pregnant. It was delicious and amazing and I regret nothing.

First kid OP?

Whaaa? This can't be for real. First of all, how is a burger not a hockey puck after been cooked for 25 minutes? Second, eating a well done burger or steak is a crime anyway, so enjoy your pink meat like normal people do.

You're fine. If you got food poisoning you'd have it by now. Women in France eat steak tartare while pregnant.
Also please relax. Do some mind full breathing and stay off the internet. The stress is worse than most of the things you can do.

Absolutely a troll.

To be fair, we can't really compare the safety of American beef to French beef. I don't know, but I doubt they load their cows up with massive antibiotics leading to superbug E. coli. Did you see the recent stats on E. coli prevalence in American hamburger. Yuck.
That said, OP is fine and should stress less.

Rare steak is fine. Burger is different since it's ground.

But OP, like other have said, you are fine.

My MIL also acts like someone is trying to kill her if any beef is slightly pink. My family eats meat that is practically still mooing. She is horrified every time.

This is what I'm wondering. How was that even edible?

If you cooked it for 25 min and it was "crispy" on the outside (who eats a burger crispy), I bet it wasn't pink on the inside. Sometimes I do a double take with the inside of something like a burger bc it is a different color than the outside (which it should be bc it hasn't hit the pan directly). I'm betting the outside was so dark brown by that point that when you saw that the inside was light brown, your anxious mind thought - OMG pink.

Anonymous wrote:Hi! I'm about 23 weeks into my pregnancy now, and I've been very cautious about what I've been eating all along. Tonight, I made my husband and I some burgers, and they were seared and crispy on the outside, but as they were a little thicker, slightly pink in tint all throughout the center. I was hungry so I ate mine, and as I was eating the sides, I noticed my husbands burger wasn't fully browned. I'm worried, is it okay that I did this? The burgers were on the frying pan for a total of about 25 minutes. 15 minutes on one side and ten or more covered on the other (to melt the cheese). I know the internal temperature for burgers has to be about 155 degrees to be safe, however I didn't check the temperature, I didn't think of it having them been in the pan for so long.. Do I have anything to worry about? This is my first pregnancy and every little abnormality makes my heart drop because I want to be sure that my little one is safe and healthy! If it's something to worry about I would like to get into the doctor as soon as I can to avoid any future issues. Advice? Comments? Questions?

This is more alarming than the undercooked burger.

I was stressed also, but by week 35 I was drinking wine, eating brie, coffee, milkshakes, lunch meat, sushi, etc etc. CALM DOWN.

Sorry everyone is giving you such a hard time. Two weeks ago, I was out at a restaurant and took 2 bites of chicken that I then realized was almost raw. I'm not generally squeamish about things, and I like my meat rare, but thanks to pregnancy hormones I burst out into tears (I was also about to board a 9 hour flight and was having visions of salmonella poisoning on the plane). So anyhow, pregnancy is scary, and you're entitled to an occasional irrational freak out. You're going to be just fine. Take a deep breath and laugh about it in 5 minutes.

The main risk with undercooked handburger is generally e coli. Pink is usually fine to kill e coli. And you'd know pretty quickly if you had an e coli infection, I think.
But, someone correct me if I'm wrong, I'm pretty sure e coli does not cross the placental barrier, meaning that it won't infect the baby directly. Of course, it's not great to get it while your pregnant, but its not like listeria. Listeria is one of the few bacteria that crosses the placental barrier and can infect the fetus directly, which is why you generally get warnings about listeria. Listeria is more commonly found in cold lunch meats -- I suppose it can be found in raw beef, but I don't think it's common there.

Its my understanding that this poster is correct. I ate a real caesar with raw egg the other week - was all worried about it, and my doctor basically said the risk with food poisoning is generally dehydration.

So, on the off chance you get food poisoning, just stay hydrated.

The same thing happened to me when I was about that far along and I called my doctor's office. They said if I felt fine everything was okay and not to worry about it. I also stressed out about accidentally eating expired yogurt and a chicken leg which looked pink but was actually just the look of dark meat which I don't usually eat.

Does yogurt actually go bad? I mean I'm not suggesting you eat it 3 months after expiration -- but a few days or even a few weeks after, I can't imagine it spoiling?
