MPD is better than it used to be and is also more diverse (Latinos, whites, Asians, not just AAs). During the Barry era, recruits were hired who notoriously had failed the police exam multiple times, and it took MPD two decades to work off that overhang.

Open season on gentrifiers...? Hmmm!

I live in a gentrifying "hood" and I see these new people moving in and how unfriendly they are to the old timers. I'm not saying that the Millennials aren't sometimes targets but gosh it sticks in my craw when I see these transplants plop down in a neighborhood and treat the existing residents like crap. A friendly hello wouldn't kill them because sometimes that helps gives you "protection" against some of these thugs in the neighborhood.

Well when your house is targeted or when you are randomly attacked, no one will speak up on your behalf because you are the person who "doesn't make nice with the losers" in the neighborhood. Keep in mind that some people in those neighborhoods know everyone and they also know who is responsible for a lot of the crime. Those people can also be allies even though they don't have your seal of approval for their current lifestyle.

They also walk beats in NYC and get to know the surroundings and the merchants there. I saw a cop on a Segway in Chevy Chase DC, but I seldom if ever see cops walking around the commercial areas on Tenleytown, Van Ness Ness or Cleveland Park, all of which have major subway stops. I'm not counting the DC cops who seem to like hanging out in the Best Buy.
