They also walk beats in NYC and get to know the surroundings and the merchants there.  I saw a cop on a Segway in Chevy Chase DC, but I seldom if ever see cops walking around the commercial areas on Tenleytown, Van Ness Ness or Cleveland Park, all of which have major subway stops.  I'm not counting the DC cops who seem to like hanging out in the Best Buy.[/quote]
