Can I wear these boots to a "gala?"

Run to Nordstrom and get a stylist.

Something like this?

Sorry, screwed up the link.

Ugh, now to figure out what will work for me. I don't need to impress anyone, but do need to look good enough to not embarrass my in-laws, who are being honored at the event.

I will go with heels, shear black hose, and some kind of (little) black dress.

Something like this could look fantastic.

Also this, if you want something a little more modest on top:

You could possibly get away with the dress if you don't have a better option, but you need to punch it up with jewelry and shoes. NO BOOTS. Maybe brightly colored or metallic pumps? Sparkly earrings and/or necklace?

OP here again. Here is the dress I have. Do you think it is just way to casual, or OK with heels and a shiny necklace?

http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=534121

If it matters, I'm in my 40s and am 5'7" and 130 lbs. Have very short boyish hair that is noticeably graying. So I'm not going to look like a super-feminine type regardless. We are taking our 2 young kids to the event, so my husband and I will be on duty for parenting type stuff. (grandparents want the kiddos there, and its their night)

You could get away with it if you accessorize. You need some bling somewhere. Big earrings and/or bracelet, or a collar-type necklace.

PS- either a necklace or earrings, not both (unless we're talking tiny earrings)

Thanks for the suggestions! I agree about necklace OR earrings, not both.

I am so glad you came here for help! Need more details. Height/weight/size/best feature?

Whoops, you added those above - chimed in before I realized there was a second page.

Sleeveless black dress, fitted, above knee length. It's from the gap, mostly cotton, and fits me well. Waist length black cardigan with 3/4 sleeves. Black tights and these boots in black:

If link doesn't work, it's the Gather Round boot from aerosoles.

Thanks for any feedback! I don't have many occasions to dress up, and am generally not very fancy.

The boots are cute, but definitely casual. If you are going to rock boots with cocktail attire, they would have to be very elegant ones. These would be ok with a black dress:

Don't look at the price, you can find similar ones much more affordable. But the general style would fit better for a dressy occasion.

Also, OP, you sound like you have a great body. That dress is too boxy and doesn't look good on the model! Go get something sexy and fun!!!

Ha! Thanks. I am fairly slim with long arms and a small waist. Tiny boobs, nice shoulders. I rock a tube top Also a bit of 40s flab/sag in the butt and thighs.

The dress actually fits me better than that model - its a bit baggy/boxy on her, as you said.

I am going out today to look for other options. Really appreciate everyone's advice!

OP - that's casual, NOT cocktail attire. OMG.
