People like that are few and far between (on both sides of the fence). It is wonderful when you can have a good informed discussion between two people who have opposing views. Unfortunately, the trend lately seems to be people really getting worked up and not really having all the facts (both sides do this FWIW - one a little more than others, but I have seen both sides engage in this type of rhetoric). It is OK to have opposing views. It is not OK to scream and yell and name call because one does not agree with you.

Why do you care? Everyone is entitled to opinions, even ones you don't share. What is it with liberals that are so intolerant of anyone different from themselves? They preach tolerance but only if it means tolerating their own insufferable selves. I think you should be relieved that you have such a professional work environment that you can be working side by side with some one for years and not let personal politics come in the picture.
