I use it as an opportunity to learn another point of view. I am very good friends with a coworker who is very religious and very conservative. I love discussing issues with her as it opens my mind to another person's point of view. We almost never agree on issues, but we openly and honestly discuss our perspectives. I think I've learned more from her than I have from people who share my views. Note- her beliefs are well thought out and she can explain her foundations for her beliefs. She doesn't just regurgitate the latest sound bite from conservative TV or radio shows.
People like that are few and far between (on both sides of the fence). It is wonderful when you can have a good informed discussion between two people who have opposing views. Unfortunately, the trend lately seems to be people really getting worked up and not really having all the facts (both sides do this FWIW - one a little more than others, but I have seen both sides engage in this type of rhetoric). It is OK to have opposing views. It is not OK to scream and yell and name call because one does not agree with you.
