DC Public and Public Charter Schools
Since Wilson is public I would assume it would be more of an issue than Princeton which is a private school chosen by those students. Where does this stop? By renaming every site , city, place of anyone who ever owned slaves or said or did anything negative to AA's? Today is Thanksgiving and it wasn't until I was a parent in the DC area that I heard complaints about Thanksgiving in public schools. Some felt there should be no special lunch for students [parents allowed to attend] since it was not part of their culture or traditions. The USA has evolved. There is no need to rewrite history / wipe out the names of presidents etc. Is Lincoln next since he was an advocate of Liberia? http://www.history.com/news/5-things-you-may-not-know-about-lincoln-slavery-and-emancipation |
Students at Wilson are too busy dealing with life and poverty and racism to indulge in ivory tower-manufactured outrage. |
If they changed the name from Woodrow Wilson to Marion Barry High (as they are proposing to do with Ballou), at least a third to half of IB parents would probably pull their kids out of the school, freeing up more spots for others while alleviating overcrowding. This might be a secret DCPS plan.

And test scores would immediately plummet, and it would stop.being a desirable school |
Test scores already are low if you haven't noticed. So is the graduation rate. |
| Have you ever noticed that one of the first things a totalitarian group does when it comes to power is change all the street names? This is rampant with Islamist leaning groups in the Middle Eat. The idea is implant the idea in everyday life that there is no history worth knowing other than the one they favor. |
A year ago I would have disagreed with the "slippery slope" argument, but I'm not so sure now. The groups that advocate name changes often have a pretty intense hatred of America's historical legacy and want to "cleanse" the country of any references that honor white men whose values don't pass the 2015 litmus test. The fact that people may have done good things, as well as held repellant views, does not matter, as part of the way these groups seek to gain more power is to focus only on their negative qualities. The only way you get around this is by deeming yourself a member of some "marginalized" group, in which case you get a pass. So, yes, if buildings named after Wilson are renamed, there is no reason to think those named after Washington and Jefferson will not meet a similar fate. If that prospect bothers you, it's time to speak up now. Otherwise, we are headed down a very dangerous path, with no obvious end in sight. |
| If you think the only two viable name choices are a racist or Barry, you need to study history yourself. |
Nah. Wilson was a racist asshole and it has been an absolute delight to watch this happen. |
| Can principal Martin weigh in on this? |
Just wait till people start taking a sledgehammer to MLK memorials. The totalitarians (like you) and the fascists (like Trump) will have a go at each other, and everyone else will be collateral damage. |
Maybe name buildings after some no name people. Perhaps just call schools by numbers. DCPS # 2. Tear down the Washington Monument, Lincoln/Jefferson Memorial. A major wipe out was Robert E Lee's estate - Now Arlington National. Don't forget anything named Kennedy since he did this: http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/jfk-refused-sammy-davis-jr-perform-white-house/story?id=23379345 |
| I can't believe there are schools named after Colin Powell. He lied to the American public and the world about Saddam Hussein's weapons, leading to a war in which many innocents lost their lives. I know blacks want schools named after them but we really need to do better than honor black murderers. |
Oh yes this is an educated and erudite argument. Equate some angry students with totalitarian Islam. Assert that the goal is to change the name of every building ever named for a white guy. Not a focused, researched argument to be found. Y'all should be at least a little embarrassed to come to the table with such lame efforts. |
So now it's totalitarian to tell the truth about Woodrow Wilson? Why don't you read this article and find out about some of the damage that Wilson did that went far beyond what other politicians of his time would have been willing to do. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/24/opinion/what-woodrow-wilson-cost-my-grandfather.html?_r=0 But if you prefer not to read it, go ahead and live in denial of the past -- that's what they do in totalitarian regimes, isn't it? Whitewash their heroes? |
