My kid has no backbone

I've been working with my kids on how to respond to comments since they were young. If he got teased as a child or someone made a comment to him like this, how did you coach him to respond? Sometimes they need guidance and some good words to respond to, and reminders that it doesn't matter what others think about his clothes/hair/personality. We talk about that all the time at home. I know when they hit puberty they will still be self conscious and worried about that kind of thing, but I hope that the base we laid down from a young age will help a little bit.
