has anyone without fed experience who's not a veteran gotten a fed job in the last 6 months?

Attorneys are excepted service and not subject to veterans preference.

Almost half of the jobs in the government are excepted service.

Not true. My agency just hired two new Grants Specialist and the vacancy was open to all candidates. They however are internal hires.

This. I'm the Grants poster.

We also hired several rounds of attorneys at mine-- and I'm hearing more to come. But we've been slammed with retirements this year. Wanna bet we're the same agency.

Most positions at my agency are only open to internal candidates. The veterans often don't possess the needed skills, despite what their resumes and online degrees may say.

All of our hires recently have been under schedule A's or some other non-competitive hiring authority. The military spouse hiring authority is a good one. We are able to hire a range of experience in our career field (medical).

What agency? Please share!

I was hired this year under a direct hiring authority. I'm not a veteran or former fed but I was performing the same exact work as a contractor for almost ten years. I believe the hiring authority is only used when there is an urgent need for a specific skill set.

I have a coworker who just got hired on after initially being passed on for the vet preference. When interviewed the vets didn't have the experience and HR went back to the resumes and she was hired. It is definitely hard to get hired if the position doesn't require specialized experience.

At my agency we hired two new attorneys and had to go through vet preference.

I'm curious, any military spouses been hired lately?

I know of 5 within the last 3 months. All in different departments.

Same here. We only go external if a position is unfilled for months. That being said my agency recently hired many new people (some vets, many not) just before the end of the fiscal year. But currently we have a hiring freeze.

Not me personally, but my agency does hire under different authorities. The most successful is the program where they hire students and recent grads. I forget what it's called, but the announcement always goes to USAJOBS. I was also hired under one of the programs before Obama put an end to it.
