If you are not sure about the size of the sand particles, then you have never put 'white play sand' in your child's sand box. It leaves a layer of white dust -- yes, dust -- on everything it touches. It is not regular sand like you find at the beach.

Toss a few cigarettes in there with her to keep her busy. We all know the whackos who think they cause cancer are nothing more than a pain in the a$$.

Wow! What bitch you are. I think the PP is just frustrated with everything we have to worry about these days. To imply that she's a whacko who doesn't believe serious health risk warnings is just plain mean.

Oh, so sorry, she's just frustrated, not snotty, sarcastic and judgmental. My bad.

Yes, just about everything, including Dove soap and Johnson's Baby Shampoo: http://www.wikicancer.org/page/The+list+of+carcinogens?t=anon . But take it all with a grain of salt (probably cancerous too!); as one toxicologist I know noted, "it's the dose that makes the difference!"

That's true, but the problem comes in the amount of things we are exposed to -- lots of small doses from different sources add up to a bigger issue.

'the studies were on men who worked sandblasting all their lives.....not kids who play with sand ocasionally for the first few years of their lives where the sand is normally dampened so not as easily inhaled...the sun is cancer-causing and we dont all live underground do we?'

maybe the best post e.v.e.r. seriously. so many times i think to myself -- why are you posting scientific (or nutritional, medical, etc) questions to an anonymous board of bored (and often not so bright) mommies who just enjoy sniping for the sake of it when a simple google search will turn up the same answer without the ridiculous infighting and holier than thou bullshit? thank you, PP. you made my day. and you are my hero.

Sand is a gateway carcinogen?

here we go again. if you think a google search is an adequate substitute for the type of advice people seek and receive on this board, that's fine. others obviously don't.

The person who keeps posting this url is a total PIA! Sometimes you seek real world advice and opinions...hence the anonymous forum. I dont think any of us take the information we receive on DCUM and consider it the absolute way to live our lives. But sometimes hearing real life experiences help you to make a better informed decision. Sorry but I can't speak to people on google. Also, most of these companies and sites are out to make money...none of them are going to tell you if their product is harmful. So enough with the damn url! Everyone knows how to google. The person who continues to post this url is nothing but a smart ass and no help to any of us! If you dont have any advice please do not post this damn url!

Don't buy white sand. It has the whiteness added to it. Real sand will not leave a layer of dust on you. We buy regular sand from HD or TRU. We will continue to go to the beach.

This is one issue I don't exactly get because sand is silica (at least here it is). The silica is not added, it IS the sand (along with other minerals). I think all the sand beaches in the continental US are primarily silica. Agree with PP's that I think the problem comes with industrial exposure...
