Wake is not conservative....

Not true. It certainly has some kids who are not conservative, but it is Southern (conservative), pulls a lot of kids from the South, and was a part of the Southern Baptist Convention until about 20 years ago. It's not Bob Jones University or anything, but it defiantly swings more conservative than most top 30 colleges. -- an alum

The school has NOT been affiliated with the Southern Baptists for many decades (final monetary ties were severed in the 80s? but it had been distanced for decades before that...really once the college moved to Winston and the SBC opened a new seminary on the old campus). There is still a Baptist congregation on the campus, but they are independent from both the University and all the Baptist Conventions (even one of the alternative independent Baptist associations parted ways with them back in the 90's because they were too liberal!).

Wake officially cut ties with the Baptist State Convention (not SBC) in the mid 90s when I was there. At the time, it was a huge deal.

The Baptist State Convention is the local branch of the SBC. And I'm pretty sure it was mid-80s. Regardless of the historical details, the relevant fact we can agree on: WFU is absolutely NOT a southern baptist institution now, nor has it been for a good long while. While you might find more conservative students at Wake than at Tufts or UPenn, the administration and general zeitgeist of the school is in line with most top universities.

+1. We have a neighbor whose DC is a current student. We hear the work load is heavy but the school is dedicated to their students succeeding in the real world. By all accounts, it sounds like the school is where it belongs, in the top 30 of all universities with a goal, as we heard, to climb higher. If we had a child looking at liberal arts, we'd certainly encourage a visit.

Wake is great Liberal Arts, Business/Accounting. Decent Pre-Med but not strong in other STEM. But certainly better than Elon.

I also know several Wake undergrad alum who have on to become Protestant ministers (and they also have a graduate Divinity school).

Another person from NC here. Winston-Salem, actually. WF is much more highly regarded than Elon.

I said the kid is conservative -- as in preppy frat Republican straight-laced Catholic all-around-good-kid boy-scout-type conservative.

If I am interviewing someone from both schools I look at the Elon kid and think hmmmm.

I look at the Wake Forest kid and think he or she works hard and wants to do something in life.

Another NC native here and I agree with earlier PPs that Wake has the better reputation.

Wake is way harder to get into.

Elon alumnus here...

While Elon is a great school with a quickly rising reputation, I definitely wouldn't put it in the same echelon (no pun intended) with Wake Forest.

That said, none of my Elon cohorts have had difficulties finding gainful employment (in NC or elsewhere) or getting into competitive graduate school programs.
