Everytime a condo is built and/or a gentrifier moves to DC the city becomes less & less interesting

Exactly how many "I hate gentrifiers" threads do we need? Here is how these discussions go:

Transplants are boring and turning the city into the suburbs.

Natives are all lazy criminals who couldn't develop themselves out of a wet paper bag.

How many different ways do you need to say those exact same things? The amazing thing is that no matter how creative you get, you will always be wrong. Generalizations about either group will never be accurate.

If you are a native and you don't like the changes, I'm sorry. Insulting DCUM posters is not going to make things better. If you are a transplant and don't have respect for natives, I'm also sorry. But, insulting DCUM posters is not going to make things better.

I used to go shopping with my mother and grandmother in downtown DC when I was a child and it was far from a shithole.
They used to force me to go and I hated it.
But looking back on it now it was interesting. Exciting. Fun.
The exact opposite of right now.

Now post some pictures of that same street, except further east, after the 1968 riots, and of that same street in 1990.

Actually that picture was taken several years after the riots.
Everything wasn't abandoned after the 1968 riots and you know that.

But then again you could always be a gentrifier speaking out of your ass based on hearsay and not facts.

Why do these new arrivals pay $2200 a month to live near chain stores, Starbucks and other disgusting condos?

Move to Europe.
Move to the Caribbean.
Move to Japan.

Move some place exciting.

Why would anyone want to be surrounded by cookie cutter blandness?

I would love to move to Europe, the Caribbean, or Japan... at least for a little while. But the problem is those places won't give me a job. So DC it is.

One of my good friends is over there right now and got his parents to pay for it.

Ask yours.

They might go for it.

I am not a native.

The city has become cookie cutter in a disgusting kind of way.

Yes, there weren't any riots right there. But there were riots on that same street further east.

Again, a generalization is almost always going to fail. Can you really truly say that about the entire city? I don't think you can. I think such a perception must come from having a very limited view of things. What may be true for a few limited areas is not true everywhere.

Yes I can.

So the tons upon tons of other people (mostly natives) who also think the new DC blows have a limited view of things as well?

I moved here in early 90s. Love some of the changes to the City (downtown!). Miss others (adams Morgan is sad).

Cities change.

The locals' "change is bad" mentality is abhorrent and unreasonable; which is why no one takes locals seriously.

Thinking that the new DC blows is not the same as thinking that the "city has become cookie cutter". I am not sure why conversations such as this can't include nuance. Why must it be "everything is better" or "everything is worse"? I suspect that even those who believe that overall the new DC blows enjoy certain aspects of new DC. It is unlikely that anyone hates everything that is new. Do you know why? Because not everything new is the same. And, because not everything new is the same, it is not accurate to say that the city has become "cookie cutter". Sure, some development has been that way. But, not all of it.

I find this mural hilarious because the type of person this mural is depicting is the exact type of person who is attracting chain stores to DC and driving up rents (both residential & business) thus forcing lots of local businesses to go out of business.
