Yes, everyone wants their daughter to be the kid who gets to 15 or 16 without the hassle, but some kids get stuck on the early side and I think even if you are bummed for your kid on the inside, you have to be positive and enthusiastic about it when it happens. |
| There is also a stigma with early periods...like the period is your fault because you let your kid be fat, lazy, and stuffed full of non-organic milk. |
I've noticed that on DCUM, but then on DCUM, everything you do as a parent, regardless of what you do, is wrong. https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/compost/wp/2015/09/03/how-are-you-parenting-wrong/ |
| Hi Op, it's good to hear that your daughter was the one to mention that she thinks her period might start soon which shows she is aware of changes in her body. It sounds like it won't be too long before she starts. dd was also ten & she also had lots of pubic hair, way more than I had, lol and her breast development was past the budding stage. I got her pads & tampons, she tried the pads a couple of times but didn't like how they felt and about keeping clean down there. I was with her & talked her through how to insert them for the first time, she has no problems using them. |
is she wearing pantiliners for the discharge?. |
| 10 is not early onset. I was a rail thin dancer who started my period at 10y5m. There is nothing you can "do". Just prepare her, and deal with whatever you need to so that she can use tampons. |
| Have you bought her any pads or tampons yet? Sounds like she's gonna need em soon. It took a bit of getting used to seeing a tampax box on my daughters bedside table As I see her as my little girl but also proud to see her becoming a young woman and handling the changes. |

I had just turned 11 a few months prior. I was healthy and slim, but I was at a small B cup at that point. It was terribly embarrassing.
It vividly remember it as it was the day before 6th grade picture day. I undressed for a shower and BOOM there it was. I either didn't notice any signs or I was too young to know what the signs might be. This thread made me realize the 30 year anniversary of my period is next month. It seems I owe my period pearl. Good thing Tampax can help me out there. If DD feels like her period is on her horizon, send her with some pads and if it make her feel more comfortable she can start wearing pantiliners. |
Agree'd. |
Have you read research that supports this? |
Yep. DD who is very thin and a competitive athlete, vegetarian, not a big consumer of dairy, eats organic, etc got her period right when she turned 11. I got mine at 12 (average weight, was not an athlete). |
| I see your daughter is allergic to dairy - was she drinking soy? My daughter had an issue with digesting milk, so from a very young age she was on soy (soy formula, then soy milk). As she started developing early someone told me to look into the info on soy…soy can mimic estrogen. My friend was told to start drinking/eating soy to help her through menopause. I made the decision to stop soy and switched to almond milk. The train had already left the station, my DD got her period at 10 as well. Much younger than me or my older DD. |
| The noticeable signs are breast development, pubic hair and discharge. My daughter was 11 in small 30A bras and when I was teaching her how to put a pad on I noticed she had no pubic hair. As she was developed in other areas I thought she should have had some by then that did not begin to appear till around 12.5. |
Make sure they are organic too! |
| I was a fat kid who ate tons of dairy. No period until age 13. |
