Why is it then regarded as some top tech school (some claiming it's better than UMD etc.) by people in VA?

Because it's no. 17 in the entire U.S. for aerospace engineering. Ignore the OP. The facts are all wrong. Also, when you say "acceptance rate" of 60%, you are forgetting that only 55% of the seats at Va Tech and some of the others go to Virginians, so for Virginians, the acceptance rate is really 30%.

This shows why VaTech grads may not be too smart. If the OOS make up 20% of the school for example and the school's overall acceptance rate is 20%, the "real" acceptance rate for OOS student is 4%? By the way, percentage of OOS students is about 24% not 45%. http://www.collegexpress.com/lists/list/percentage-of-out-of-state-students-at-public-universities/360/

Never said I was a VA tech grad. At the undergrad ENGINEERING open house last spring, the statistics put up pm screens during the crammed presentations says 55% in state, 45% OOS - that may be for only the engineering department or the entire school. It didn't matter to me because DS wants only engineering and that is the toughest school to get into.

That would make George Mason a half step up from community college? But VA does have a great community college system.
