Inlaws decided NOT to move next door

I can understand your feeling abandoned. Right now the future is so uncertain to you and you wanted to feel some certainty. But the thing is, there is no certainty. As others have said, the grandparents could come and fall ill. You may live for many, many years more (and I hope that is the case)!

My guess is that the grandparents, shocked by your diagnosis, made a sudden offer and only afterwards realized how big a change it would be for them to leave their familiar home, friends, town. Unless they felt an "emergency" pushing them, they don't want to do it. I can understand your being disappointed, but maybe it is for the best. I wouldn't interpret it as them not caring for you, or not understanding how serious things are. I would look it as evidence that maybe making this break with familiarity is much more overwhelming for them than they thought.

Op here. Yes, this is pretty much what I think too (in my saner moments). I do know that if I'm really deteriorating, they will be here in a second. And that's what really matters. Thanks for your perspective.
