My dad still has not met my kid...

Wow, sounds like he's a lousy dad who might actually have a lot on his plate right now. It stinks that he's like this, but I think it best not to expect much of him, ever.

My FIL hasn't met my second child. He is serving time in a federal prison-long story, but it basically boils down to he did something dumb as the head of a financial institution and a judge decided to make an example of him despite nothing bad actually happening and him not profiting in any way whatsoever. He sadly now has stage 4 cancer and we're struggling to get him home before he dies. He may never meet his last grandchild. And this is someone who would love to spend as much time as possible with his family and grandchildren.

Life isn't always fair. Family isn't always perfect. I get that you want your dad involved in your child's life. It sadly doesn't sound like it's a priority of his.
