I am an EL Haynes parent, got in through the lottery last year, and feel VERY lucky. It is a wonderful school, the teachers are attentive in innovative. The support staff is also amazing. They are very focused on learning, and I am truly impressed.
I love love love the schedule. It is a year round school, but there is a 2 week break in October (intercession available for both weeks), a 3 week break in December (intercession available for 2 of the weeks), 2 weeks off in March (intercession available for 1 of the weeks), and in the summer, there is a 6 week break, with intercession available for 4 of the weeks. So, essentially there is 1 week off in December, 1 in March, and only 2 in the summer where there is no coverage. Intercession is AMAZING. It is like a "camp" with a subject for the week, like gardening, learning about the weather, learning about Japan, etc. There are lots of field trips to support any given subject. They are very inexpensive, about 150.00 for the week, but if you attend 3 of them per year, they are 5 DOLLARS for the week, since the school was given a grant from the city. Before and After care is available, for a small fee, maybe 17 bucks a day or something like that. The parents are very involved. There is a fundraiser/yard sale at the school this Saturday from 9 am - 1:00. Come by if you want to meet some parents! Best of luck, hope this helps. |
PP - The website is www.elhaynes.org. It is a DC Public Charter School with a lottery. The slots are in high demand.
