| There does seem to be a cost/benefit ratio to exercise. Meaning that a moderate pace will give decent results in calories burned but a much faster pace will require a great deal more effort for a nominal increase in calories burned. The way to maximize this is to exercise for the same amount of time. At a faster pace you cover more distance but also more calories. I think as a beginner it's ok to be happy with a decent pace and a decent calorie burn. When you get more fit you can decide if a faster pace is really worth the effort. |
| I recommend the "map my run" ap. it's free. You can change "run" to walk, hike, cycle, etc. it will map your route while also showing distance, speed, and calories burned. |

You might want to track calories on an app like myfitnesspal.com or fitday.com
For me, walking 4 miles would probably be around 250-300 calories. |
