That was ridiculous. They should have just given you all that shit as a college graduation present. Instead, they gave you a gift for high school graduation that was useless to you for four years. |
my wife got a ruby ring from her dad for a high school graduation gift that seems to be her most prized and cherished possession.
My DD is graduating high school this month, she doesn't do jewelry but I would like to get her something nice like this but really don't know that first place to start. She has done an outstanding job in school , fighting to get a B- in very challenging AP chem course on same semester she switched from team taught to regular ed. Huge transition and she never gave up and did well. where could a clueless yet cheap dad go to buy nice piece of jewelry (couple thousand say ?) for a DD ? |
1. You're not cheap to "only" spend a couple thousand 2. Don't copy your FIL. Your kid isn't into jewelry. So don't buy it for her. Does she need a laptop for college? That'd be a great graduation gift and should last her through college. Same with a personally made messenger bag (Timbukt2). I'd give that with a card where you write out how you're so proud of her and why. 3. My parents didn't give me a graduation gift for high school or college. My mom always bought the presents to give me from the both of them. Except a couple of times. My dad bought me a nail kit when I was about 11 (I still use the nail clippers, he bought me a "grownup-looking" wallet, and he gave me a cool calculator which honestly he may have gotten for free from work, but I've used for over 30 years. Your gift doesn't have to be expensive to be meaningful unless you've raised a spoiled brat. |
College and a laptop for college. |
No, because my family doesn't pressure kids to go to college. I was the first cousin to graduate HS, so I wasn't sure what they were planning, now I know that they're doing the same thing for all the cousins, and since some aren't cut out for college, it's a good thing. |
This sounds like DDs wish list. |
Cleaning service??? |
We're in the college and stuff she'll need for college (e.g. laptop, linens) camp. |
I got 10k when graduating both hs and college. I went full ride on scholarship, so it's not like my parents paid for tuition too, but they did give me a paid off car. I really needed that 10k. SO much money was due when I moved to DC for my first job after graduation- deposit and first months rent, second months rent (salary takes a while to come in!), moving costs, some new furniture, etc. |
