1. You're not cheap to "only" spend a couple thousand
2. Don't copy your FIL. Your kid isn't into jewelry. So don't buy it for her. Does she need a laptop for college? That'd be a great graduation gift and should last her through college. Same with a personally made messenger bag (Timbukt2). I'd give that with a card where you write out how you're so proud of her and why. 
3. My parents didn't give me a graduation gift for high school or college. My mom always bought the presents to give me from the both of them. Except a couple of times. My dad bought me a nail kit when I was about 11 (I still use the nail clippers, he bought me a "grownup-looking" wallet, and he gave me a cool calculator which honestly he may have gotten for free from work, but I've used for over 30 years. Your gift doesn't have to be expensive to be meaningful unless you've raised a spoiled brat. [/quote]
