Upper middle class

Also upper class, at least to me, seems to imply some sort of birthright or something.

It's ok for you to admit you are upper class. That's the American Dream, really. It doesn't have to be a negative.

I would be proud to call myself upper class, especially when a person self-made.

We're working class po white trash that save 35% of our income and have no debt.

Sounds like we're getting there, but we still might have a problem with the middle class being too large. If we use what we have in the thread so far we have:

Upper Class - HHI of 550k and higher
Upper Middle Class - HHI of 300k - 549k
Middle Class - HHI of 75k - 299k (seems too much of a range, no?)...

HHI is 200k right now, with me working would be around 260.I consider us upper middle class. We owe a house, owe a car,max out 401k,have good vacations, and save on average 30k a year.

What about:

Upper Class - HHI of 550k and higher
Upper Middle Class - HHI of 200k - 549k
Middle Class - HHI of 75k - 199k

More accurate?

Average American HHI is around what 50k now?
So is America mostly working class?

I am upper middle class. Spouse and I are both educated professionals. Our income is about $500K, $50K of which is unearned. We are not upper class yet because we don't have enough money to stop work and live off our unearned income. To me, once our HHI became $300K, we became upper middle class.

For a family of 4

1% >$400k
Upper class > $250k
Upper middle $150k-250k
Middle Class $100-150
Lower middle class $75k-100k

Well it would adjust depending on where you live, obviously the above is for DC. If you look at the chart/map you would change it for other parts of the country and actually increase it for New York.

DH and I have HHI of $180k a year and a combined net worth of $550k. I consider us upper middle class financially, although our lifestyle is pretty solidly middle class (home/location choice, how much we travel, where we shop, etc).
