Hunt Valley has a strong accelerated math program. I have had kids at both the center and also Hunt Valley and have been very pleased with math acceleration at HV. So far, it seems as if the accelerated math kids at the center will end up at the same place as the AAP kids at the center. They do accelerated pull outs starting in first grade, and level three weekly classes starting in third. Hunt Valley has some wonderful teachers. It is smaller and very neighborly, and feels like the staff knows all the kids personally. The office staff is a huge part of the welcoming vibe.
Sangster has a very strong base school program with very bright kids. It also has an amazing elementary school performing arts program, for music, theater, band and orchestra. The school vibe is very positive too, with great families in both the base and AAP program. The families I know with some siblings in AAP and some siblings not are very pleased with both programs. I think it is because the school works very hard at making all the kids "sangster" kids and not AAP vs base school kids. There are exceptions like anywhere but everyone I have met, base or AAP is very proud of Sangster. Look at all the elementary school feeders for West Springfield HS/Irving MS and Lake Braddock Secondary. The test scores are very comparable, as are the great school ratings. If you talk to people whose kids attend those elementaries, they all have similar good things to say about their schools. Most people feel their kids are being well challenged, and the exceptions are usually teacher specific (every school has at least one bad apple). |

I see a few homes still for sale in the Westbriar (Marshall Pyramid neighborhood) for $730k - $780k (one at $699k) These are walking distance less than a mile from the school.
Most are are already under contract though, but this is s hot area. When a house is listed it goes quickly. Also these homes may need updating (if that matters to OP). I drive by daily, but I live in a newer home farther out. |
| I would stay away from Marshall and focus on madison or oakton. Much better schools with similar priced neighborhoods. |
| Love the Oak Hill/ Franklin Farm area, especially with kids. House in that price range & Great School rating of 10. It does also have a AAP center. |
| OP, I think you are focusing on the wrong thing. I would focus instead on a neighborhood with a good HS. I think you will find that all the schools flowing into a good HS--AAP or not--will be good, too. |
LOL you are an idiot, let's cling to 20 year old cliche's, are you elderly by chance? It's like someone saying STAY AWAY from madison or oakton because McLean is soooo much better. The truth is when you review SATs, SOLs etc... the differences between the pyramids of madison, oakton, marshall, mclean are minuscule and certain schools are stronger than others in math, english etc... should we tell For example, Marshall is much better than Oakton and McLean, but the rest of the scores are very close. https://p1pe.doe.virginia.gov/reportcard/report.do?division=All&schoolName=1333 https://p1pe.doe.virginia.gov/reportcard/report.do?division=All&schoolName=1333 https://p1pe.doe.virginia.gov/reportcard/report.do?division=All&schoolName=1368 https://p1pe.doe.virginia.gov/reportcard/report.do?division=All&schoolName=1397 Face it, prices for real estate are higher in ALL of the above school pyramids because they are very good. It's no accident you moron. This is from someone who doesn't live in a Marshall pyramid but does have a clue. |
BTW Greatschools rates Marshall a 9 and oakton and mclean are an 8. How is that possible if Marshall is so terrible? |
| What is greatschools ? who gives ratings and how does the ratings work ? |
| Ouch! Touchy topic! Stay away from Marshall. |
Size of school, size of classes, in school programs, differentiation both high and low, and good teaching are important to us. The high schools are easier to research because there are less of them. |
Thank you. This is very helpful. We like these areas too. |
ratings take SOL scores and compare them to other schools statewide. Very important. |
ha ha .. half the schools don't ever care about SOL's Here are average 2014 SAT scores for some high schools, ranked by greatschools ranking ( shows, I think much important for college admissions) 10 Thomas Jefferson High for Science and Technology - 2219 9 Langley High School - 1865 Madison High School - 1788 Marshall High School - 1774 Robinson Secondary - 1683 8 Chantilly High School - 1710 Lake Braddock Secondary - 1693 Mclean High School - 1819 Oakton High School - 1802 West Springfield High School - 1675 Woodson High School - 1798 7 Fairfax High School - 1635 Centreville High School - 1658 6 Westfield High School - 1684 5 Herndon High School - 1696 South Lakes High School - 1676 |

I would look at the Woodson HS pyramid schools- mantua, wakefield forest, canterbury woods or olde creek. Homes are in the 500-700K range (mantua would be on the higher end).
Zip codes are mainly 22003 (outside beltway), 22032 (between LRT and Braddock Roads) and 22031. |
