Obama wants you to pledge loyalty to him tomorrow

I will be alarmed because

1) I hate to be sold of anythings,

2) the president has already lots of communication channels, himself is at the center of media attention, he can get on TV or radio whenever he wants. Why would he want to send an army to knock on doors to send his message? This is just odd to me.

Actually I do find it different because we are being asked to state, by strangers on our front door step, whether we support the current government or not. That is vastly different from goals such as clean water, better street sweeping, etc. And don't get me started on the Mormons either - I don't answer the door to clean cut 20 somethings wearing suits and ties!

You are not being asked to support the government. That is an inaccurate and, if I may say so, somewhat paranoid interpretation. You are being asked to support three broad policy goals. The goals are, in fact, so broad that I don't know why anyone would actually oppose them. However, they are not a plan.

Beyond that, I think anyone who didn't just fall off the turnip truck understands the real goal is to collect contact information so that you can be inundated in the future with requests for contributions. I am glad that I provided the Obama campaign with a throw-away email address because I recently reached the end of my patience with Tim Kaine and have cancelled the address. The dude was hitting me up for money almost daily.

Oh, Lordy, agreed. And don't get me started on the billboard emails...

My take on this door-to-door is that it is basically a reflection of the administration's (not new) goal to involve people in the process and, in broad strokes, where their country is going. I don't imagine the Stasi will be ringing doorbells on this one.

The right is trying to make waves about this because they are jealous of Obama's ability to communicate directly with the people through his own organization, which is a unique source of power for him. It think it's a first in this country. The conservative leadership knows they can't do the same thing, and it is driving them nuts. I guess they shouldn't have made fun of community organizing.

For just one moment, imagine the spin if this was a Karl Rove plan?

Well, if this was Rove's plan, people would be wondering what drugs he was on. A more realistic Rove plan would be:

Energy -- keep America dependent on foreign oil requiring endless Middle East wars;

Health Care -- there's a problem with health care? All my rich friends get all the care they need.

Education -- support unfunded mandates and further cripple public education.

But, I think you understand why going door-to-door to get pledges of support for such a plan wouldn't be terribly successful. Rover only canvassed a few people and the signatures he got were on $15,000 checks.

Hard to glean your point from this sentence fragment. Are you mocking the door-to-door thing? People's commitment to devoting time and enregy to something besides themselves? Participatory democracy?

Otherwise, though, it's hilarious. Seriously--the GOP is just rocking right now!
