Best durable couch

We love our La-Z-Boy. They have really nice modern looking sofas now - not just really tacky fluffy things you remember from the 80s. My favorite thing is that for $150, I think, we bought a fabric protection plan where they coat it with a stain and water repellant and if that doesn't work, they'll send someone to clean it, and if that doesn't work, they'll give you a new sofa. I spilled red wine on a tan sofa and was able to wipe it off. I was pretty thrilled considering we have a messy 2 year old now.

OP Here - Most stores sell couches in a variety of sizes so not concerned about fit right now. Not to mention custom fabric orders take up to 3 months to arrive. We have a child and a busy few months, so yes, we're starting to check out furniture now to see what we like, compare things, etc. If we happen to find something we really like and it goes on sale we can purchase early, the point was to get suggestions for a durable couch.

OP Here - this is what we have now and are not happy with how it has held up and it's only been 2 years.

I'm in love with the furniture made by Joy Bird, mostly because of the great colors you can pick for the upholstery. If I ever have money to spend on a couch, that's what I'd buy.

That's weird. Our has held up tremendously well to daily use.

OP Here - Hm interesting. I'm not sure about not getting to try it out first, but I like the site, reviews and concept. Thanks!

Personally, with that budget I'd get a leather sofa or sectional from Restoration Hardware. But I've had good luck with microfiber couches. The fabric stands up really well to kids and cats. If you can get removable cushion covers, I would do so. I've thrown microfiber in the wash on a gentle setting and air dried; comes out great.

OP here thanks for the tip! DH loves leather but I like fabric, so we'll see who wins!

I love our leather sectional from Ethan Allen. Has held up so well with three kids.

Restoration Hardware is outrageously overpriced. Choose something from a good furniture MAKER like Rowe or another North Carolina company rather than an overpriced BRAND. Pay for the quality, not for the name.

I have a friend who just received a chair from them and was not impressed. The fabric is fine but she says the chair looks cheap. It's also bigger than she expected but that's her fault for not measuring properly.

Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams is where I got my incredible sofa.

Down filled, and removable covers, it's the most comfortable couch I have ever owned or sat on. And I went to 2 dozen stores and sat on numerous ones to find it.

We have a leather couch from Arhaus that's 8 years old. It gets a ton of use from us, our 3 rowdy kids, and even our dog. Still looks and feels almost like new.

I was about to chime in and recommend Arhaus as well. My DH was adamantly against leather and I usually hate microfiber, but we were able to get a microfiber that doesn't have that typical microfiber look/feel to it, but still wears like iron. I can't tell you what I have wiped off of this couch with a damp cloth over the past 3 years. The couch itself still looks great as far as the upholstery, pillows, etc. If you look at the ARhaus website they talk about how the couches are made-- for example they are 8-way hand-tied, which I remember thinking was important but I can't remember why.

Still, I can't imagine buying a couch, let alone a $5K couch, without seeing the space first.
