Under 40k??? Seriously??

Unnecessary. We have plenty of money and both my kids have cars but I felt strongly that they did not need luxury brand cars. I don't object to luxury car brands at all - we have them, and used to have an X3, but I don't think teens need them as a starter car. Besides she may not even be able to take a car to college - both of my kids go to colleges that don't allow cars for freshman.

I'd never buy my kid a car without them contributing money, period. I have never paid more than $20k for a car, let alone bought a new one.

But, if you set the standard by buying older brother a BMW, you screwed yourself. Why *wouldn't* you buy one for the girl
child?

In my family, teens get the hand me down cars.

Unless you want to keep her as an entitled spoiled brat. If she wants nice things, it's time for her to learn that hard work is required.

In the meantime, donate that $40K to the people of Nepal or something.

Ridiculous.

Your first car gets so many dings, dents and scratches, a luxury vehicle for a teen sounds really impractical.

What happens when she's working her first job out of college and can only afford a Honda? It just seems like you're setting her up for disappointment later in life.

Its fine and I would ignore these people who say that a teen can't earn it.

My parents bought me a convertible 3 series when I turned 16. I loved the car and I am now a productive adult.

I say quit waiting to live and IF YOU HAVE THE MEANS, do it now.

I think that the haters sound jealous.

Not their responsibility to donate to the people of Nepal. If they can afford it, that is their choice. It doesn't make her a spoiled brat.

Great first car to wrap around a tree while texting. Go for it!

Depends on if you want her to be the one driving everyone everywhere all the time. IME, the kids with the nicer cars became the chauffeur for every event in high school -- parties, road trips, food runs, whatever. All the kids wanted to ride in/be seen in the nicer cars. She'll end up spending a ton of money on gas and potentially cleaning up after her friends all the time.
