Disney World or Disneyland?

We took our kids to Disneyland when they were 3 and 4. Great age for it. We went in early January and that was perfect -- not at all crowded, cool weather. Manageable size for a couple days visit. However, we have family in CA so Disneyland was just part of the trip. DH doesn't really like amusement parks so a DW-all parks all the time trip would not be his preference.

Disneyland is essentially just the Magic Kingdom part of Disneyworld but older. Agree with other posters - do Disneyland if it is part of a California trip anyway. You can go to the beach, San Diego etc.

It is much smaller than DW, but: 1) California adventure is literally next door, which essentially doubles the size of the park; and 2) with small children, you're lucky to get through 12 rides in a day anyhow. You can easily spend 3 days at DL/CA without getting through all the rides. The major plus of DW, aside from the distance, is that it has some types of stuff DL does, e.g. Epcot and the big outdoor parks. But you're not going to run out of things to do unless you spend a full week at either place (which is way too long in my opinion).

To me this but draw of DL is I can spend 1-3 days there and then the rest of a weeklong vacation in LA. I can't personally deal with a full week in Orlando.

LA is disgusting. Honestly, it is awful. San Diego, maybe but there is not much else to do with a 4yr old in LA.

With a 4yr old, there is no way I would take a 5hr long plane ride to DL. That is a vacation for when they get older and maybe you want to explore more of California. I would 100% go to DW. Even if it is during the hot summer months, if it is 95 and humid in DC and 100 and humid in Orlando, it makes little difference.

With a 4yr old you go at rope drop and get on a lot of rides. Leave between noon-1pm and go the pool and then take naps. Back to the parks around 5pm for the more rides, parades, fireworks. You avoid being in the park during the hottest and busiest part of the day. Stay onsite either on the monorail or save money and stay at Pop Century or Art of Animation. Both areas a 4yr would love. They have transportation right to the hotels so there is no need to rent a car.

And if you want to do anything else outside of Disney there is Sea World, Legoland, Universal, etc... but for the first trip I would just stay inside the DW and do everything there.
