Give me another East Coast beach besides the common ones

(Okay, just kidding, but only a little! Love OCNJ and can't help mentally comparing every other beach to it. No where else is as good to me.)

Too funny. My husband grew up going to this beach and does always compare it to any other beach we go to. Those Cape Cod and Maine beaches folks rave about did not measure up and you don't want to hear his remarks about DE beaches! So far only San Diego and Hawaii beaches have been ok replacements for him

I love the Cape Ann beaches in northern MA but unsure of house rentals or resort options....

All beaches are awesome!!

Assateague and chincoteague are the best beaches. No development all beach . Weeds out the riff raff.

It's a bit of a drive and you have to take a short ferry ride over, but we go frequently and it's not at all unusual to see license plates from DC, VA, and MD. It's too far for a long weekend but fine for a week. Nothing over two stories there, no fast food places, lovely and unspoiled (looks like Ireland in many spots). No rides because there is no commercial boardwalk but plenty of activities like scenic bike rides, sailing, fishing, kayaking, etc. The Fred Bensen public beach is great for families (toilets, showers, a snack bar). And best of all, unlike the places you mentioned above, there's a "there" there. The island was settled in the 1600s so there's a lot of history and New England charm.

I was going to suggest the RI beaches. They are totally low key and close to Boston, not to mentione Providence and Newport.

+1

It is amazing how different it is to OCMD. I let my kids ages 10 and over go to the boardwalk and bike by themselves. It is so family friendly. The worst you get is a few high school surfer kids on the boards late at night. And even that is fun to watch.

I can't stand Ocean City Md. but now I am wondering what it is about Ocean City NJ that people like so much? I mean, Cape May has the bird watching and Victorian homes, Assateague has nature and wild ponies, Ocean City NJ has - rides, a boardwalk, and a ton of guys named Tony? What is the zeitgeist there, or is it just nostalgia?

To a set PP question on why OCNJ.... Since you need to pay to get on the beach it is beautifully maintained - kept very clean. Soft white sand. Boardwalk is also nicely kept up and provides a break from the beach with fun attractions (small amusement park, arcade, mini golf, stores). Great frozen custard. I love it bc it combines a beautiful beach with close by attractions.

It is a dry town so there are no bars which means no college kids, drunks, rowdy people. It attracts families - that is it. The boardwalk isn't full of disgusting graphic t-shirts and people smoking cigarettes. The rides are fun, Mancos n Mancos pizza is the best. Johnson's popcorn and Laura's fudge. Lots of mini-golf and even a small water park. Asbury Ave has a quaint old town victorian feel with great little shops. There is a playground at least every 3-4 blocks. They have a music pier and many family activities all year long. If you are on the northern end, you won't use your car all week long unless you go to Somer's Point for some drinks, awesome seafood at the Crap Trap or take the 20min drive to Atlantic City for nightlife. Very few hotels and mostly houses means the beach isn't jam-packed. But it isn't empty like OBX so your kids will find playmates for the entire week. If you are on the southern end, it is quiet and charming. A quick drive to Strathmore for wing night at the Deauville Inn is always fun for the adults/teens. People are very loyal to this beach town and are known to visit from very far if they grew up going here. It is very much nostalgia but there is good reason to try it brand new too.

Now Wildwood NJ has the Tony's and it is very much like OCMD.

Cape May Point. (The Point part is important). Beautiful, unspoiled beaches. The kids can ride their bikes in the street- there are few cars. VERY kid friendly and as close to my child hood on Cape Cod as I have found.

Thanks! I am more familiar with Belmar and I have always wondered about the attraction. Belmar has the skee ball, clean if somewhat narrow beaches (I HATE that you have to pay) but also lots of drunken frat boy silliness. Watching people try and make a last minute hookup in the parking lot of D'Jais or Anticipation at closing time was a riot.
