I can't stand Ocean City Md. but now I am wondering what it is about Ocean City NJ that people like so much? I mean, Cape May has the bird watching and Victorian homes, Assateague has nature and wild ponies, Ocean City NJ has - rides, a boardwalk, and a ton of guys named Tony? What is the zeitgeist there, or is it just nostalgia?
It is a dry town so there are no bars which means no college kids, drunks, rowdy people. It attracts families - that is it. The boardwalk isn't full of disgusting graphic t-shirts and people smoking cigarettes. The rides are fun, Mancos n Mancos pizza is the best. Johnson's popcorn and Laura's fudge. Lots of mini-golf and even a small water park. Asbury Ave has a quaint old town victorian feel with great little shops. There is a playground at least every 3-4 blocks. They have a music pier and many family activities all year long. If you are on the northern end, you won't use your car all week long unless you go to Somer's Point for some drinks, awesome seafood at the Crap Trap or take the 20min drive to Atlantic City for nightlife. Very few hotels and mostly houses means the beach isn't jam-packed. But it isn't empty like OBX so your kids will find playmates for the entire week. If you are on the southern end, it is quiet and charming. A quick drive to Strathmore for wing night at the Deauville Inn is always fun for the adults/teens. People are very loyal to this beach town and are known to visit from very far if they grew up going here. It is very much nostalgia but there is good reason to try it brand new too. Now Wildwood NJ has the Tony's and it is very much like OCMD.
