I need to get out of my toxic work environment, but how can I handle things in the meantime?

There is a middle ground between clubbing with your co-workers and people saying you are mean. Maybe you show frustration easily or are just too quiet and again don't smile or come off as judgemental/ aloof.

This. I had an aa boss who was exactly that way and no one not even other aa's thought she was nice. She was queen bitch and her smile was false for the higher ups only but you could tell. The company sucked though and she got promoted because everyone was scared to speak up about all her bad work.

Oh good grief, this work culture is just not a good fit. OP, job hunt as much as you can. Don't quit, smile at everybody, play their game. In a week or so the shock of not being promoted will start to wear off. You'll just have to compartmentalize. Forget work when you're not there. If you don't have home responsibilities, go to the gym a lot and get together with friends. Consider a bridge job-that is, taking something you don't love for a year or two until you can launch into something you prefer just to get out of your current environment. I've been there and it's a hassle. Just focus on the good stuff in life while you extricate yourself.
