Tell DCPS to start school 8/31 or after

They are scheduled to start school 2 weeks before Labor Day when most other school districts in the country start after Labor Day.

I'm with you. DCPS should do exactly what the other school districts do. Like you, I can't understand what is so difficult about DCPS consulting the numerous other school districts in the nation before they make their calendar. I have a friend who works in Boston Public Schools, and she told me that their BPS coordinates with Seattle Public Schools on developing their calendar.

Done, thanks.

They will be spending Aug. in Illinois with grandparents & cousins. I hate to pick them up so early when DC is still hot and humid.

I'm from Illinois. It will be hot and humid there too.

Early Childhood Week for PK coincides with the first week of school for K and above. PKers now attend school on Thursday or Friday of that week.

If you are pissed about it, send your kid to private.

+1. Alternatively move to VA, MD or choose a charter school that doesn't follow DCPS's calendar.

Well that's stupid...why would BPS coordinate with a school system on the other side of the country?

If you're from Illinois you'll know that there's a lot a climate variety in the State. Plus they are near Lake Shelbyville. I loved it as a kid as much as I hated it as a teen.

I prefer a shorter summer and more breaks during the year. I don't want to fight for time off with coworkers, travel is cheaper at off times, and endless weeks of camp upon camp upon camp gets old for my child since I don't work somewhere that I have the luxury of taking of the entire summer to spend quality time with them (which would also likely get very old after a couple weeks when they wanted interaction with their peers).

I spent a lot of summers at Lake Shelbyville, on the beach, because it was hot and humid.

We'd go to Bangs Lake or make the trek to the Michigan Dunes. Oh yeah!

Move to Virginia, OP and go to Kings Dominion if you want. Leave us alone in DC.

Most parents that I know would have no problem making other arrangements for their kids to have enriching, supervised time during those two weeks--I HATE that they go back to school so EARLY. My kids are so happy when we are spending time at their grandmother's during those relaxed weeks--why it has to come to a screeching halt so early--I just think it is really awful.

Yeah, I mean, the nerve of DCPS trying to accommodate the vast majority of families in the system rather than the privileged few who have the means to take long family vacations (but apparently MUST TAKE those vacations in late August rather than during the other nine weeks of summer break).

My heart breaks for you, PP.

Anonymous wrote:Yes, why would I do this??? No summer camps those final weeks of summer. Huge pain in the @$$ to have school start later.

Oh right, because God forbid we have unstructured down time with our kids. What a pain!

You are a spoiled ass

Do you have data to support the bolded?

Pretty much all of the South East other than VA starts in mid August. MoCo schools start before Labor Day. I'm not sure about the rest of the country.
