What else would your child take? I mean, isn't that what comes next? How did he/she skip compacted math 4/5?

Oh wait, maybe my kid's in compacted 4/5, not 5/6. For parents of older kids, does this compacted thing mean that 5th grade math is split between the two years? I frankly haven't been paying much attention to what's being taught in class, and I don't really understand this compacted business. At home, our kid is learning 6th grade math on Khan Academy. He says he is bored with math at school.

PP, if you read school report card it should say
Mathematics - Compacted 5/6 or 4/5.

DS in 5th grade also had a 249. School wouldn't allow him into compacted math and he's never received above grade level instruction. He doesn't complain but I know he's bored. He earns ES on everything but admittedly makes a rare careless error. Private testing showed exceptional math ability. The tester was surprised to learn of his classroom placement and said it was way below his ability. We're leaving MCPS in hopes we can get him off the track he's stuck on. I'm not asking for any special treatment but if there's a class across the hall that meets his needs, why couldn't they at least let him have a test run.

And we aren't concerned about missed material. He has a thorough grasp of pre-algebra.

Have you found a private school that will push him into 6th grade algebra from 5th grade math? Did you consider taking your results to MCPS for further consideration?

Our school has 50% in compacted math. He just didn't have a good year in 3rd grade when they made the placement decision. I pleaded in 4th for a change of placement and was told absolutely not.

I didn't take anything above the principal's head because the principal said it was the county tying his hands. After reading posts here, there's obviously more flexibity in placements than he admitted. Kicking myself!!!

Our private has assured me they will challenge him in math. I don't know if that means pre-algebra or algebra. When I asked, I wanted a pre-algebra (IM equivalent) placement because I didn't have the private testing results.

We had the same situation except we made a successful request at 5th grade, and was placed into compacted 5/6. With 249 Map-M score, you should have a very strong argument to place him into compacted 5/6 or just register IM for 6th grade at his middle school

Yes. Did well in Reading but poor in Raven. It is hard to get in to HG. Others did better so deserved it more. But my point was that 259 is high MAP-M but not so high that kid is HG material.

I'm the PP with this kid, and while I think his score is solid, I don't think it means he should skip Math 6 (I asked, and he says he is in compacted 4/5). It was a kind of rhetorical question anyway. I have an older child in 6th taking IM, and that is above grade level for 6th. My kid could probably handle more, but doesn't want to be in the position of having to take something like Calc II in HS because 4 years of math are required in HS. At a certain point, the acceleration leaves your kids in a weird position come 11th/12th grade...so unless your kids are truly prodigies...

Agree about the hyper acceleration. I'm one of the posters above with a son who is very strong in math. I want him to feel a little more challenged than he is, but not stressed. What's the point in the end? I really don't care what year he takes calculus. And if he isn't overworked in math, he can focus on his weaker areas.

I was just curious. My child did well on reading and math but also did not do well on Raven and was W/L.
