We did the bus the first couple of years but then oldest kid became familiar (and we actually became comfortable) with the subway thing.... including a transfer.
I sincerely admire what Hardy is doing, but I am in awe of what Basis has already done for my kids (now plural). Husband works downtown which is comforting in the event of health emergencies, but Basis is the real deal in terms of education. I did not get this kind of education in 5th-8th at my DC private nor did my brother (and I would have struggled, but learned in the end, while he would have thrived and my mom would not have spent all this time and money trying to find him intellectual stimulation through CTY and Chess etc). Basis is still a work in progress, but so is Hardy, and Basis has a large infrastructure to back them up and measure, evaluate, and figure out how to help our kids who struggle. If everyone is struggling in a subject, they usually fire the teacher - brutal, but effective, and they have the nation wide portions of the precomprehensive and comprehensive exams that we all take to evaluate whether kids in DC are learning what we need to, learning it fast enough, the data is incredible, their dedication is impressive, our DC CAS scores were #3 and then #2 (right after Deal), and and we were NEVER going to send our kids to Wilson because they are not white and we did not want them to be in a place where assumptions are made, stereotypes are confirmed, and our kids would be at risk for falling in with the wrong kids for "acting white." |
| ^ Absolutely - BASIS is a place where smart is cool, where kids can get together and geek out on sci fi, technology, art, space, science, history, anime and go deep on their passions and interests and not be judged for it, let alone pummeled for it as is so often the case with the typical big public middle school / high school scene. |
| The question was about the COMMUTE. |
Pp, you are absolutely white! |
|
word..........
but my children are not white and do not look white and that is all that matters |
| Pp, I am a BASIS parent and know you-they very much look white, at least as white as most of the non AA kids do. Nothing wrong with that, and BASIS is a great school. |
| ...smh... |
| I suggest you attend the final open house/back to school night at Hardy at 6:00 pm on Wed. next week. 6th grade teachers will attend. |
|
If you are in GP it is crazy not to opt for Hardy, and give your kid not only a great education (especially if he/she's good or advanced) but the chance to walk to school and get there in 5 minutes, instead of 45 minutes. Basis would mean 1 and 1/2 hours a day of commuting.
There's so many better and more useful things middle-school kids can do with an additional endowment of 7.5 hours a week: more homework (Hardy has modular homework assignments, that advanced kids can fulfill), clubs, sports, music, reading, relaxing at home, cooking etc. I would not think twice. |
And surely you didn't think twice BOOSTER! Defending mediocre education, way to go! |
|
So if it is not accelerated, it is mediocre?
|
Only if they want to have your family there. |

If you know a precocious, current DCPS student in grades 5, 6, or 7 who is rising into the next grade this year who could use some additional academic challenge and enrichment this summer you may want to consider the FREE DCPS/University of Connecticut Summer Enrichment Program that will be held in July. Half days, Monday-Friday at Hardy MS and Stuart-Hobson MS, with competitive application. This is the second year of the summer partnership between DCPS and the University of Connecticut's Neag Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development. (Home of Dr. Joseph Renzulli, key leader in the field of gifted education/education psychology and the Schoolwide Enrichment Model "SEM".)
