| I would seriously look into Banneker and McKinley. |
Poor Ezra. I'm sure he'd be quite disappointed to learn his school is not "decent". |
Yes. Looking at the DCPS profile, Cardozo had 2% advanced in math and 5% advanced in reading. If you really think he is capable of getting 5s across the board on AP tests, how much benefit do you think he'd get from the classes? I think he'd be far better off at a selective DCPS high school, such as Banneker or SWW. |
Not only that, but what about your child. Think about your child and what environment they would enjoy, rather than treat his educational high school life as some bizarre educational experiment to get a leg up into the ivies. Weird!!!!

Yeah, and even if you didn't want/couldn't do Banneker or SWW, or wanted the experience of a non-Wilson HS...it can't be that hard to OOB into Eastern which, at least, has an IB program. I think it's still small and new enough that a kid as driven as this could be a big fish in a small pond but at least he'd have teachers with a bit more experience teaching advanced classes and more students able to fill seats in those classes. |
Eastern is an IB school? |
|
We're at Eastern regularly for DCYO and they have a wal up where they post pennants for colleges that students are going to. I don't recall any ivies, but there were a couple top 25 type schools which are just as competitive as any Ivy school. IF you think there is any differentiation between the Ivies, or any of the top 25 schools in selectivity, you are gravely mistaken and will hurt your child's chances of getting into college if you go with that mentality.
Unfortunately, I am an alum of one of the lesser Ivies, but would have been just as happy at any of the other 24 top schools. Also did my grad work a a major public university and found many people much smarter than myself, or many of my classmates from undergrad, but of course had I gone to Harvard, that wouldn't be the case, right? |
Yes. http://easternhighschooldc.org/intro/academic-offerings/ib-international-baccalaureate/ They also offer AP classes and some cohorts and programs that seem sort of similar to Wilson's academies. |
+1!!! |

Great things are definitely happening at Eastern. However, getting in OOB is actually much harder than you've implied. Lottery results are out and they only offered 10 9th grade spots (7 are siblings), with 85 on the wait list. DCPS results are here: http://dcps.dc.gov/DCPS/Learn+About+Schools/Lottery+and+Admissions:+Apply+to+Our+Schools I got into an Ivy from a poor public high school, but my parents certainly didn't have a master plan. A selective high school seems like a good option in this case. |
Not to be rude but how poor was he? My cousin applied but was turned down her mom (a single parent) made too much money, even though she had two other mouths to feed as well. My cousin eventually went to Morgan State, than U of MD medical school, did her residency at Duke and now is a certified millionaire physician |
| Have you considered beating your child and spouse, divorcing, abusing alcohol and sending your child to Child and Family Services? If your kid wins the Intel Science Talent Search with that background, Ivy entrance is assured. Oh, also, you could send the kid to Cardozo. |
| If I were interviewing for my Ivy I would wonder why the heck this kid's family put him at Cardozo when they clearly had other better options for HS. This kind of thing is transparently conniving unless motivated by the student himself with a clearheaded rationale, such as a desire to be part of his neighborhood school. |
| Both parents are teachers but are raising 5 children...so poor is not the word to use because they are rich in other attributes. A pity party acceptance was hardly the reason for my niece and nephew to excel. #perserverance |
Thank you. So sick of the Cornell bashing on this board. |
