Children Running Races

I used to "run" the Hill Classic. No training whatsoever.

My kid (age 9) run with me on my short runs or recovery runs 2-3 times a week. He likes to talk to me while we run.

A kid can run a 5k without training, especially if they do other sports, but it might be frustrating or intimidating for them.

My son did winter indoor track and had a great time. He plays soccer year round so he was in decent shape, but after running regularly for two months his stamina really improved. When we first timed him for a mile he ran the first lap really fast then lost steam and walked a bit then jogged another lap before saying he was tired. We encouraged him to finish just to get a time and it was around 10 minutes. A month later and it was just under 9 minutes. Two months later and he can run a mile in 7 minutes, 15 seconds. He can go out and run two miles in about 16 minutes and most importantly is having fun doing it. He wants to keep running and asks to go out for a run now on the weekends.

My son did his first 5k at 5y. He ran about 2/3 of it and walked the other (his idea- his twin brother wasn't interested at all and hung out at the finish line with DH. So no pressure from us.) No training.

He's now done 5-6 5ks over the years (now 9y.)

My daughter started to develop of love of running through GOTR (which, as someone else pointed out, IS a running program and culminates in a 5K race). Anyway, since then she has started running with me 2-3 times a week (as PP mentioned, she loves to chat during our runs) and we sign up for 2-3 5Ks in the fall/spring. She takes it pretty seriously. She hasn't gone above a 5K yet (she is only in 4th grade) but she challenges herself to shave time off her 5K at every race. She is at a sub 10 mile on her easy runs and is working on getting under 27 minutes at her next 5K. As a runner, I love that she is getting into it so young. Neither of us are athletes, so it is a great way to get her moving.
