Kids With Special Needs and Disabilities
Okay thanks. Has anyone in this situation actually had a child that was eventually accepted into a private school after this disclosure? Or were the therapy reports enough to send them running? |
Rejected from every single school. |
| Two kids with ADHD diagnoses, included reports as requested, both accepted at Sidwell. |
| Will let you know- we are waitlisted at a couple where they have not gone to the WL yet. One school that said no encouraged us to reapply next year - the other two said thanks but no thanks. I do know some kids who have gotten in with therapy in their files - but it seems like the younger they are - the harder it is. I think its easier once the kids are a bit older - say second, third grade. Hard to tell at this point. I'd love to hear from others on this, too. |
can I ask what you are doing next year (assuming this app. process was for 2009-10)? Have you decided? We are in limbo here. |
| Wow. Sidwell took 2 kids w/ ADHD? What grades were you applying for? Are you legacy? |
I can tell you from observation that Sidwell has lots of kids with ADHD. Mine entered in elementary school (not pK or K), so I guess they had at least a little bit of a track record for academic achievement. No special status. |
Very interesting. Last year, our ADHD boy was rejected everywhere we applied for K. Low 90's test score. Nice kid (ok, I am biased here). Large class size in MoCo has been tough on him. |

How large is the class he is in? Looks like the best we will do with public re:classroom size is 20. Hoping that won't be too hard on my DC.... |
| Several parents in Montgomery County have been trying to start a new small, private parent organized but special ed teacher run school for 09-10. The problems have been finding a space, finding an engaging, interested special education teacher, and to target in on what type of child the school would serve. Will post as main subject as well, in case parents of kids without a school next year can throw around ideas and see if there is a possibility. (We are in that position, with the exception of a school we are not 100% sure will meet our child's need) |

13:19 and 14:00 asked about the Harbor School in Bethesda. We applied to Harbor in June on the recommendation of an amazing school consultant/psychologist when DC's school proved to be a poor fit. It was a Godsend for the 2 years DC attended as we worked on figuring out what DC's needs were. It was a small, nurturing, loving school with very individualized attention. DC started in JK and was very intellectually stimulated and had great fun learning. The indoor gymnasium was a surprising feature for a school that lacked an impressive physical footprint. DC is currently at a more widely well regarded academically rigorous school and often wishes to return to the warm embrace of Harbor. Good luck to you!

| I'm sorry if this is a silly question, but...does "focus issues" mean difficulty concentrating/easily distracted? Thanks! |

I think the adhd kids who are accepted at Sidwell probably were on meds right? Thus, they become manageable situatins.
We refusd to medicate our child and were kicked out by Flint Hill. |
| Not the PP but I know several kids at Sidwell who are on ADD meds. |
