OP, I think the idea is silly... yes, they want to extend the "summer break" at OC. But the cost is that they are also delaying the "start" of full week vacations. It's still a 10-week break, no matter what the weeks are.
The MCPS BOE is very much against this shift. But a few politicians want to mandate it for the entire state. |
| It's a horrible plan and I hope it does not pass. If anything, our kids need a longer school year. All this bill will do is pad the pockets of Ocean City and cost parents who must pay for extra summer camp while they work more money. It benefits a minority of the population - resort businesses and those who are wealthy enough to spend weeks on end on vacation. |
| Schools used to start after Labor Day here. |
| People here are in the minority. Most people want school to start after Labor Day. |
But do they want school to start after Labor Day if it means that school will run until the end of June? Also, should there be a state law about starting school after Labor Day? Why can't each school district make that decision for itself? |
| August is so gross anyway, by the third or fourth week I'd be ready to go back. Give them the time off in June, while the weather is still nice. |
I would hate this. August is summer, not school. |
It's either August or June. |
This. I'd rather we keep it as is and start before Labor Day. |
| Just about the entire northeast starts after Labor Day. I believe they would have to stay in class later in June to be able to start after Labor Day. |
| I prefer after Labor Day. Would this be in effect for this coming 2015-16 school year? |
| Anyone know the answer to the pp's question? |
| Much of the western world starts in sept. I prefer. Aligns vacations with friends and families better. |

I prefer starting after Labor Day. I like the first week of school only being 4 days. It gives the young ones a little adjustment then right into structure as opposed to 5 days on, then 3 off, 4 on, 2 off.
Plus, vacations are dirt cheap at the end of Aug. |
That would be a great benefit |
