please, please DCPS stand strong and don't close!

And the thing that irritates me is that our bus, if it runs today, will be empty of all the kids from the ghetto. So keeping the schools open in a misguided attempt to serve the poor is simply wrong since at least in our neighborhood they mostly do not go to school on days like today. There are plenty of other social safety nets which I am supportive of and DCPS does not need to keep schools open on a day like today.

Honestly, using these standards there would be no school from Nov to March in places like Cleveland (or thousands of other towns/cities).

Those cities have armies of snow plows and get the roads done right. DC does not have that. I know since I lived in northern cities like that most of my life. DCPS should close.

YOU DON'T NEED SNOW PLOWS FOR AN INCH OF SNOW!
There is an inch out there.

Your point is what??? What I stated is a fact since I have seen this effect anytime there is any sort of bad weather.

The snow plows do more than plow the roads. They are treat the roads.

The roads are fine. I just got to work. I live and work in the city. I don't understand why everyone is so anxious to close. I for one would prefer that my children's summer plans begin on time. DC only builds two days into the schedule.

^That should read snow plows also treat the roads.

PP point was not very nicely put; however, at my school they are correct at the middle/high school level.
Most needy children do not go to school because they don't wan/can't leave the house, perhaps they don't have the appropriate clothes or they just don't want to and use any excuse not to go to school. They're certainly not going to get on a bus and come just for the free breakfast and lunch. The only students that showed up on delay days were the SpEd students and the ESL students, the school would be practically empty.

PP was me. I am irritated because people say DCPS stays open when they should be closed IMO in order to serve needy kids. I am all for helping those in need but when conditions warrant closing schools then I think they should be closed especially when students do not show in droves on days like this. Even the elementary school kids are not on the bus on days like this so it is not just older students. As for coats, I am pretty sure DCPS has programs to give winter clothing to needy students like our charter does so even that excuse does not fly.

You now have a full hour and a half to figure out how to safely get to school on time. Drive slowly, walk slowly, get to the bus stop early, but you can certainly get there.

CLOSE SCHOOL!!!

Is it NO colder today than any other day of the winter. I guess we should close schools from Jan to March because some kids in the District don't have coats.

**That said, I work as an RN and do home visits on completely indigent families in NE and SE every day. Rest assured, the kids have coats.

Good for you, now I hope you realize most teachers who work for DCPS do not live in DC. Several of then have kids that will be home today so they will use their leave and students would just spend time in the gym or in a classroom with an adult. There would be no lesson. It is better to just close.

Troll alert. I can't envision anyone living in DC, much less under the ago of 60 and who sends their DC to DCPS, using the term ghetto. Where exactly is this ghetto?

Sorry but this is a lame reason to close schools
