NP, but it is cutting in line. You wait until everyone in your party/family is ready before you get in line. |

There are good reasons to hold a spot for someone--a person who had trouble standing for longs periods of time, or someone with young children who might get bored and disruptive. Or maybe it's really cold and the elderly/young are better off waiting somewhere warm.
It also depends on the effect on people further back--if everyone is going to get in anyway (a ticketed event where everyone already has a ticket)-- no biggie. If it means someone else who has been waiting longer might not get in, that's rude. |
The US is in a constant state of some cutting in line for immigration, but the president is okay with that. |
| Don't go to a movie screening in DC, there is one person that always lets 20 people cut in line at the front and sometimes people that waited for 2 hours do not get in. |
So perhaps your child should not be going to the types of events where lines are required until you have worked with them to resolve their 'difficulties?' I can respect your MILs situation, but don't make excuses for your kid being an asshole. Regardless of whether you have some 'diagnosis' about why said child is an asshole, the world involves waiting in lines, and raising your child to think they can avoid it and others, who do not have said 'difficulties' will accommodate them is incorrect. Your response to those who don't want to accommodate them - "sorry if it upsets you" explains why your kid is in asshole - you are, too. |

Ok, am I the only person who think that it is ok? In immigration situation - if it is a large family, I don't see anything wrong that one person will go in line while the other person get to park the car, unload kids from the car, maybe feed kid a snack or change a diaper . Then they can join the line.
In movie theatre - what is the issue if everyone have assigned seat? It's not like they are going to take your seat and you will not be able to see the movie. The only problem would be if the even without assigned seats, like standing concert, or embassy event, when people made the effort to get there early- then I agree, everyone has to get in line. |

One year I waited in line overnight at Cabelas for a black friday event. Morning came and I noticed four guys walk up next to the barricade line, start talking with some friends who had waited in line overnight, store employee walks by, the four guys point to their friends and ask the employee if they can duck under the rope, employee said yes.
Well I was not having any of that BS. I walked over to a cop that was on duty and told him what happened. He walked over and threw the guys out of line. People around us were cheering. I did my shopping and when I was walking out I saw the four guys still waiting in line to get in. I smiled. |
+1000 Glad I'm not the only one who saw the need to call out this cunt's tantrum-enabling parenting. |
Screenings are not assigned seating, it is first come, first serve. That is why line cutting is a big deal. |
Depends on where you are |

My 5 year old is thought we have to wait in line because that is how the world works. In fact, when someone tried to "cut" in front of us in line once at the food store my five year old pointed out that we were in line.
Without order, there is chaos. |
I disagree. It's their immediate family waiting in line! One parent taking the kids to run around instead of stay in line is not a big deal at all in most situations. |
| Somewhere like an airport I'll go in and get in line with my toddler while DH parks the car. He then joins us. No one has ever made me feel that's rude, though it doesn't happen too often. |
What are emotional difficulties? |
Most movie theaters in the United States do not have assigned seating. |
