Idiot tax mistake

Anonymous
OP, I did the exact same thing -- received my state refund 1099G the week after I filed. And I noticed that I also didn't properly file my 1099G last year. The impact is only about $120, but I have no desire to be a tax cheat.

I'm frightened to look back more years in case I've been doing it wrong all this time… What did I think, that I could just throw away that piece of paper? I have no idea why I never really looked at it before. Idiot. So many amended returns in my future.

Source for this? I thought it was the 1040x.

amended return needs to be filled only if the form is filed past the original due date of the return.

This is not true. You need an amended return. That goes for the state as well.

Well, I am going to say it one more time, if the revised return is filed before April 15, the original return is treated as superseded by the IRS. same goes for corporate taxpayers who file before March 15. If a revised return is filed after the original date of the return, then the form for amended return needs t be used, I.e. 1040X or 1120 X. If the OP waits to file an amended return after April 15, and pay the additional tax due at that time, interest and penalties will apply.

Since OP e-filed with Turbotax, I don't think he will be able to e-file the second form. I recommend paper filing and attaching a statement to the second return to explain that the original return filed on so and so date is superseded and that the second return is filed to reflect change in taxable income due to XYZ.....

You're still wrong no matter how many times you say it.

it is a common practice that any CPA would confirm. just because you have not heard about it, does not make it wrong. It is often applied when there is significant overpayment. A "quick" tax return is filed in January to obtain the refund and a another one is filed prior to the original due date of teh return. The first return is considered superseeded.

Just because the IRS can have employees handle the situation doesn't mean you should be doing it.
