Sink in Kitchen Island?

This is how I would design my dream kitchen. I don't want dirty pots and pans on m island. But I also like to cook and entertain, so a prep sink would be perfect.

i love having my sink in my island because my girls are always sitting at the other end of the island and that way we can talk and hang out while I prep food, do dishes, load the dishwasher. And yes the dishwasher is in the island.

I didn't want to have my back to my girls all the time, same for when we have casual company.

Sinks in an island is a waste of valuable space. Besides using the island for prep work it also is a great place to lay out food for a buffet, or for anything else requiring a big workspace. Keep the sink on your back counter.

I absolutely hate, hate, hate sinks in the island. I'm house hunting now, and it's honestly a dealbreaker for me or at the very least something I would have to put money into to change. I know the way that I operate in the kitchen, and I know the way I set up the area around my sink, and I cannot do that with an island sink. I also think it would look messy unless you always put everything away immediately. It seems messy with water splashing. I do not even want a little prep sink in the island. I also hate the idea of range tops in the island.

+1.

I've had both. Since moving to our new house and having this arrangement (sink in island), I get to see and chat with my kids much more often. With my DH and friends, too. This is a huge benefit I hadn't foreseen.

Anyway, my advice is to have the sink situated in the place with a nice view - so if there is a window, under the window. Or if not, in an island looking out across the room towards a window. I can't imagine washing dishes and looking at a blank wall.

My sister and mom both have huge islands with the trash pullout, sink, and dishwasher on one side and barstools on the other and they both LOVE it. Both of them have open living areas and love being able to be at the sink and still chat with other family members or guests instead of having their back turned to them.

I think my sister has a double sink and puts the dish rack inside the sink and my mom actually has her dish rack on the counter opposite of the island. They both love it especially my sister because it means she can do dishes and chat with her teenagers while they sit at the island and have a snack/do homework/whatever. It's a big island, so there's never any worry about water splashing or anything. And actually, the concern about water splashing is weird - I don't lose that much water when I'm washing my dishes - I have a deep sink, maybe the PPs have the older shallow sinks.

I will never understand my current kitchen was laid out the way it is, and cannot wait to renovate it and put the sink under the window!

moved to a me house with sink n dishwasher under the island. this is the best feature I enjoyed in the new house. I clean the dishes while I chat with my kids and husband. althought there was a beautiful view at the window above the sink in my old house, I was always there cleaning dishes by myself and cannot talk to anyone in the house. A beautiful view loses it's charm after a few months or years.

We have the built in dispenser for hand soap. Looking at a dish rack and sponges would make me crazy. It did make me crazy in our old sink, which was against the wall, so I'm not sure the sink placement is the issue.

Same here - I have no complaints about the sink and dishwasher in the island.

I hate dishracks, so I will always vote no dishracks! After I'm done washing dishes I dry them all and put them away.

+1 We recently renovated and put the sink on the island and stove on the wall opposite it (not directly behind sink). It has worked out well. Only change I'd perhaps have made was to make the island a bit deeper. Kids working on homework can't sit in the seat opposite the sink when I'm prepping dinner because they risk getting water on their papers. But, it's better than risking getting set on fire by the stove! My mom has a stove on her island and I'm never comfortable with the kids hanging out there while she's cooking.

Also, we have a pretty deep sink so dirty dishes waiting for the dishwasher go in there and aren't in my line of sight.

I don't think that having the only/ main sink in the island is ideal, but if that was the only option, I would raise the counter where the seating is 6" above the counter with the sink so the people sitting at the island or kids doing their homework won't get their papers wet and any dirty dishes near the sink will be hidden somewhat.

I have a small kitchen so an island is not something I could have now. When I can there will NOT have a sink and god forbid stove on my nice island. I just can’t stand that look at all.

It depends on how big your island is. Ours is over 10 feet, and the prep sink is not taking up valuable space.

Preference order for me:

1) sink in the counter, if it has a window for me to look out

2) sink in island if there is no window

3) sink in the counter facing wall - least desirable. Which is what I currently have. I put up a mirror so I can see what's going on behind me. I hate facing a wall.
